Russian President Vladimir Putin has clarified his position on the growing Iran Israel conflict. In a press discussion in Saint Petersburg, Putin addressed several key concerns regarding Moscow’s stance if Iran seeks assistance. He also reaffirmed Russia’s close relationship with Iran and expressed support for Tehran’s peaceful nuclear activities.
During a roundtable with international journalists, Putin was asked if Russia would support Iran with weapons in case of war with Israel. He responded that Iran has not yet made any formal request for help. However, he emphasized that Russia and Iran have a deep friendship, and he openly supports Iran’s government.
Putin referred to a strategic partnership deal signed between the two countries in January. He clarified that Russia had offered to help Iran build an air defense system, not to supply specific weapons. He said Iran showed limited interest in that offer, but discussions are ongoing.
According to him, Russian experts are working on this issue, and about 600 Russian delegates, including business leaders and officials, are currently in Iran. Putin pointed out that these teams are still active there and have not left, implying that this presence itself is a form of support.
When asked what Russia would do if Israel, with U.S. backing, tried to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Putin avoided direct speculation. He stated firmly that he did not wish to even discuss such a possibility.
Putin was also questioned about a potential shift in Iran’s government due to the conflict. Instead of answering directly, he said that Iranian society is built around the current Islamic Republic’s leadership, signaling that a change is unlikely or not something Russia supports.
Regarding the broader geopolitical picture, Putin called for all sides to focus on ending hostilities. He revealed that he maintains communication with both the Israeli Prime Minister and the U.S. President. He stressed the importance of reaching an agreement that ensures Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear development while addressing Israel’s security concerns.
Putin stated that Russia is ready to mediate between Iran and Israel. He said Moscow has already begun discussing potential peace strategies with Tehran, Tel Aviv, and Washington. This indicates that Russia is actively working behind the scenes to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-scale war.
He concluded that any efforts to reduce tensions would benefit not just the Middle East but the world at large. By offering to help both sides, Russia is positioning itself as a possible peace broker amid a very volatile conflict.
