The Venice Carnival is one of the most famous and oldest carnivals in the world. Every year, millions of people visit Venice to take part in the celebrations. But while tourists enjoy the colorful shows, music, and masks, local residents have a very different experience.
Venice gets very crowded during Carnival. The narrow streets are often full of people, making it hard to walk or travel anywhere. For many locals, this time of year is not about parties—it’s about avoiding the crowds.
Anna O’Halloran, who was born in Venice, says the most important thing during Carnival is knowing how to move around the city. “I usually take the back streets,” she says. “There are fewer people there. It’s the best way to get around.”
The Carnival of Venice began in the 11th century. But it became popular in the 18th century. In the past, it was a time for people from all classes to come together. Today, it is a big event with parades, music, costumes, and masks.
Anna believes the masks are a big part of the Carnival’s charm. “When someone wears a mask, you can’t tell if they are rich or poor,” she says. “That’s the beauty of it. Everyone feels equal.”
Even though the Carnival is fun for many visitors, some locals choose to leave Venice during this time. They want to avoid the noise and the rush. But not Anna. When she stays in Venice, she usually meets her friends at Campo dei Tolentini, a quiet square on the west side of the city.
“We don’t go to the main areas,” Anna says. “We like to stay near the smaller canals. It’s more peaceful there.”
Many events during Carnival take place in famous areas like St. Mark’s Square, around old buildings, and along the main canals. But locals often prefer to enjoy the event from a distance. They find quiet places to relax, away from the tourists.
One popular spot for young people is Campo Santa Margherita. This area is known for student life. Many university students and young workers come here to hang out after classes or work.
Another local shared how hard it is to enjoy Carnival as a Venetian. “Carnival is an iconic event,” he said. “But for us, it’s hard to enjoy because the city is so full. The narrow roads are packed with people. It’s hard to even walk.”
Someone else who lives near the Rialto area said, “Sometimes I can’t even leave my house. There are so many tourists standing right outside my door.”
The Carnival is a time of joy and celebration. But for many locals, it also brings stress. They love the tradition, but they also want peace. So, they find ways to enjoy it quietly—or sometimes, they leave the city altogether.
In the end, Venice during Carnival is two different worlds. One is full of lights, colors, and fun for visitors. The other is a quieter, hidden side where locals try to hold on to their normal lives.
Whether they stay or leave, one thing is clear: the people of Venice know how to deal with the Carnival in their own way.
