Employees at The Health Plan offices in West Virginia walked a “Mountaineer Mile” on Wednesday to support healthier lifestyles and promote wellness in the workplace. The event took place at the company’s offices in Wheeling and Charleston, following Governor Patrick Morrisey’s statewide initiative that encourages people to walk regularly in local parks and communities.
The Mountaineer Mile walk is part of a broader effort to improve physical health among West Virginia residents. The Health Plan adapted the program to fit within its own work environment by organizing group walks on company grounds. A total of 158 employees took part, with 118 walking in Wheeling and 40 joining in Charleston. Some employees remained in the office to manage essential duties like answering phones.
The walk marked a new step for the company after all employees returned to in-person work on January 1. Company leaders said this was a perfect time to launch an activity that helps employees feel connected while promoting health and fitness.
The walk was inspired by Governor Morrisey’s recent speech at Independence Hall in Wheeling, where he introduced the Mountaineer Mile program. The state initiative marks one-mile trails in parks across West Virginia to motivate residents to engage in regular walking. The Health Plan saw an opportunity to support the effort by organizing its own walk in urban locations, making fitness more accessible to employees during the workday.
Although the walk was not held in a state park, the event remained closely connected to the original goals of the Mountaineer Mile. It showed how local organizations can adapt public health programs for use in workplaces and neighborhoods. The Health Plan even extended an invitation to Governor Morrisey to join the Charleston walk. While he was unable to attend, members of his team participated in the event.
The company has also introduced flexible lunch break options for workers who want to continue walking during the day. This change allows employees to take slightly longer lunch breaks to fit in daily walks without affecting their job responsibilities. The company hopes these changes will support long-term health improvements and boost morale across departments.
Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay active. Health experts agree that just 15 to 30 minutes of walking each day can improve heart health, reduce stress, and lower the risk of chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Walking also supports mental well-being by helping people relax and focus better at work.
This workplace walk is not just a one-time event. The Health Plan is considering more regular walking activities depending on employee interest and feedback. Company leaders say they are open to making this a weekly or even daily practice if workers find it helpful and enjoyable.
The Mountaineer Mile initiative reflects growing efforts across the state to address long-standing health issues. West Virginia has some of the highest rates of chronic illness in the country. Programs like this aim to encourage small, sustainable steps that can make a big impact over time. When companies like The Health Plan get involved, it spreads awareness and encourages others to take part.
The Mountaineer Mile also offers a chance for workplaces to build stronger teams. Walking together allows employees to connect outside of the usual work setting. It builds teamwork, reduces stress, and improves overall job satisfaction. Workplace wellness programs like this can lead to fewer sick days and higher productivity over time.
The Health Plan’s decision to join the Mountaineer Mile initiative is a positive example of how businesses can take part in state health efforts. Even without access to parks, organizations can still promote movement and fitness through simple programs like lunchtime walks.
As more companies explore wellness programs, activities like the Mountaineer Mile may become a regular part of office life across West Virginia. Whether in a park or around a city block, every step helps build a healthier future.
