A Michigan Snowstorm Crash left more than 100 vehicles involved in a massive pileup Monday as a snowstorm swept across the state. Interstate 196, just southwest of Grand Rapids, was closed in both directions while officials worked to clear the wreckage.
The crash involved over 30 semi-trailer trucks and dozens of cars that either collided or slid off the icy road. Michigan State Police reported numerous injuries but said no deaths had been confirmed. Stranded motorists were transported to Hudsonville High School to wait safely and arrange rides.
Pedro Mata Jr., who was driving near the crash site, described how difficult it was to see in the blowing snow. “I could barely see the cars in front of me,” he said, adding that he managed to pull his truck into the median to avoid being hit. “It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you.”
The pileup is part of a major winter storm affecting much of the country. The National Weather Service issued warnings for extreme cold and winter storms across states from northern Minnesota south and east through Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Snow had already fallen as far south as the Florida Panhandle the day before, causing slippery conditions and even affecting playoff football games in Massachusetts and Chicago. Forecasters warned that freezing temperatures could continue overnight into Tuesday in parts of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.
Ottawa County authorities reported multiple crashes, jack-knifed semis, and cars sliding off roads during the snowstorm. Emergency crews and towing companies worked in brutal cold to remove stranded vehicles. Grand Valley Towing sent more than a dozen trucks to help with the cleanup.
“We’re trying to get as many vehicles out of there as quickly as possible so we can get the road opened back up,” said Jeff Westveld, manager at Grand Valley Towing.
Officials expected Interstate 196 to remain closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene and restore traffic. Drivers in the area were urged to stay off the roads until conditions improved.
