Dustin Poirier, the UFC lightweight star known as “The Diamond,” is preparing to retire following his trilogy bout with Max Holloway at UFC 318 in New Orleans. With his final fight ahead, fans and sports followers are looking back at his family life, career highlights, and total earnings.

Born on January 19, 1989, Poirier was raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. His father, Darrell Poirier, has Acadian French roots, which contribute to Dustin’s strong Cajun heritage. While there are rumors that Darrell was involved in combat sports, no public records confirm this. Dustin struggled in school and dropped out of Northside High School in the ninth grade due to frequent street fights. He later turned to mixed martial arts at the age of 18 as a positive path forward. His mother, Jerre’ Foley Chaisson, always supported his passion. He began training seriously at a young age, and by 2009, he had already made his professional MMA debut.

Dustin married his longtime partner, Jolie Poirier, in 2009. They met during their school years and built a life together over time. Jolie later co-founded The Good Fight Foundation in 2018. The non-profit focuses on child health, education, and support services in Louisiana communities. The couple welcomed their first child, Parker Noelle Poirier, in 2016. They recently shared exciting news: they are expecting a second child. This personal milestone played a major role in Dustin’s decision to retire. He now wants to shift his focus to being a present and active father.

Throughout his career, Dustin competed in two UFC weight classes. He began in the Featherweight division (145 lbs) between 2011 and 2014. As his body grew, he moved to the Lightweight class (155 lbs) in 2015. Standing at 5’9” with a 72-inch reach, his natural weight outside of training camps reaches around 185 lbs. Although he was once a potential candidate for the Welterweight division (170 lbs), Dustin confirmed that UFC 318 would be his final match. As of July 2025, he is ranked sixth in the UFC Lightweight division.

Poirier built a strong professional record of 30 wins, 9 losses, and 1 no contest. His victories include major names such as Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Justin Gaethje. Out of his 30 wins, 15 came by knockout and 7 by submission. He earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and trained with American Top Team in Florida, although he continued to live in Louisiana. One of his biggest achievements came in 2019 when he won the interim UFC Lightweight Championship. His fighting style, resilience, and humility earned him a loyal fan base.

According to MMA Salaries, Dustin’s total career earnings have surpassed $10 million. His most lucrative fight came at UFC 257, where he earned an estimated $5.1 million against Conor McGregor. For his final UFC appearance at UFC 318, his payout is projected between $1.6 million and $2 million. In addition to these earnings, Dustin collected over $750,000 from performance bonuses across 15 award-winning fights. He also benefited from pay-per-view shares, which increased his overall income.

Outside the octagon, Poirier is admired for his commitment to giving back. The Good Fight Foundation has helped many schools, hospitals, and families in need across Louisiana. His efforts were recognized in 2020 when he received the Forrest Griffin Community Award, a prestigious honor in the MMA world.

As he prepares to leave the sport, Dustin Poirier closes a chapter filled with challenges, growth, and victories. He remains one of the UFC’s most respected fighters, not just for his record, but for his heart, discipline, and drive to serve others. His decision to retire is driven by love for his family and a desire to be present during their most important years. After years of dedication, “The Diamond” leaves the UFC as a symbol of strength, courage, and compassion.
