Dezhou City in Shandong Province has kicked off 2026 by issuing 50 million yuan (about 7.15 million U.S. dollars) in consumption vouchers for residents during the New Year holiday. The vouchers aim to encourage spending on popular products such as digital electronics, home appliances, and smart home devices, boosting the local economy and market vitality.

During the three-day New Year holiday, which concludes on Saturday, shoppers crowded the digital sections of major shopping malls in Dezhou, eager to use the vouchers. The program offers up to a 15 percent discount per item, capped at 500 yuan, drawing significant attention from consumers.

“I came early this morning and bought this mobile phone. I got up early to grab this voucher. I’m very happy, as I saved 500 yuan in total,” said Zhuang Wei, a local shopper, reflecting the excitement the program has generated.

Retailers are actively coordinating with leading brands to maximize the impact of the consumption voucher policy. Zhao Sha, deputy general manager of a local home appliance store, said, “We’ve worked closely with major brand manufacturers, focusing on supply, pricing, and service. Consumers buying mobile phones, tablets, watches, and smart glasses can enjoy a 15-percent subsidy.”

The vouchers extend beyond electronics, covering cars, home appliances, and smart home products. During peak spending periods such as New Year’s Day and the upcoming Spring Festival, Dezhou plans to host over 60 promotional campaigns to further stimulate holiday consumption and support local businesses.

Local authorities highlighted that the vouchers are not only intended to increase sales but also to improve residents’ access to modern products and enhance their shopping experience. The initiative is part of a broader effort by Shandong Province to encourage consumption, promote economic recovery, and maintain steady growth.

By offering targeted subsidies, the program ensures that consumers receive tangible benefits while encouraging participation across multiple retail sectors. Stores participating in the program reported a noticeable increase in foot traffic and sales since the vouchers were distributed.

The initiative also demonstrates the local government’s commitment to supporting both consumers and businesses. By stimulating demand, it creates opportunities for retailers to introduce new products and strengthen customer loyalty. Many local shops reported that combining the vouchers with existing promotions has resulted in a surge of early-year sales.

Digital and smart products remain particularly popular among shoppers, as consumers look to upgrade their gadgets and home appliances after the holiday season. Analysts note that such voucher programs can be effective in driving consumption while promoting technological adoption and improving overall market competitiveness.

Dezhou’s holiday voucher scheme has also attracted attention from neighboring cities, as authorities consider similar programs to boost local retail markets. The program exemplifies how coordinated efforts between government, businesses, and consumers can stimulate economic activity while meeting modern consumer demands.

Looking ahead, Dezhou plans to expand the program for other key holidays, ensuring sustained economic activity and a vibrant retail environment throughout 2026. The initiative also reflects a growing trend in China, where local governments use targeted consumption incentives to drive spending and support businesses during peak shopping periods.

For residents, the vouchers provide a practical way to save on popular products while enjoying festive shopping. For businesses, they offer an effective strategy to increase sales, attract new customers, and strengthen ties with the community. As the program continues, both consumers and retailers are expected to benefit significantly from this boost in holiday consumption.
