A tugboat travelling near the United Arab Emirates was damaged after being struck by two projectiles in the Gulf of Oman, according to a British maritime security agency. One person was injured in the incident. The vessel continued its route, but the attack has added to concern about safety in waters close to the Strait of Hormuz.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that the incident took place south of the narrow shipping passage. It did not identify the vessel, and no group had claimed responsibility in the initial report. Investigators will need to establish what struck the tugboat and whether the attack was deliberate.

The Gulf of Oman is an important route for ships travelling to and from the Persian Gulf. The nearby Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the world’s seaborne oil exports, making it one of the most strategically important waterways in global trade. Disruption in the area can affect fuel prices, insurance costs and shipping schedules.

Tugboats help move, guide and support larger vessels in ports and along shipping routes. Damage to such a vessel can create risks for crew members and nearby traffic, even if the ship remains able to move. Operators may need to inspect equipment and assess whether the vessel can safely continue its work.

The incident comes amid wider tensions in the Middle East and reports of attacks on maritime traffic. Shipping companies have been forced to consider the risk of further incidents, while insurers may raise premiums for vessels travelling through areas considered dangerous. These costs can eventually affect the price of goods transported by sea.

Governments and maritime agencies often respond by issuing warnings, monitoring vessel movements and sharing information with ship operators. However, identifying the source of an attack can be difficult, particularly when no group claims responsibility and evidence is limited.

The safety of commercial shipping matters far beyond the region. Oil, gas, manufactured goods and food products all move through international sea routes. If companies change routes or delay shipments, delivery times can increase and supply chains can become less predictable.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and provide further information as it becomes available. Until the cause is established, it would be premature to attribute responsibility to a specific group or government. The attack nonetheless underlines the importance of protecting crews and keeping vital maritime routes open to commercial traffic.
