In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent nearly 200,000 troops into Ukraine. His goal was to take control of Kyiv, the country’s capital, within days. The plan was to remove Ukraine’s pro-Western government and bring the country back under Russia’s influence.

However, the plan did not go as expected. Ukrainian forces resisted strongly, and Russia failed to capture Kyiv. Now, more than three years later, about 20% of Ukraine’s land remains under Russian control.

    What Was Putin’s Goal?

When the invasion began, Russia aimed for a quick victory. Putin wanted to:

    • Capture Kyiv
    • Overthrow Ukraine’s elected government
    • Stop Ukraine’s growing ties with Western countries like the United States and European Union.

The Kremlin believed this move would prevent Ukraine from joining groups like NATO and would restore its place in Russia’s traditional sphere of influence

    What Happened Next?

Despite Russia’s large military force, Ukraine’s army and people fought back. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused to flee, staying in Kyiv to lead the defense.

The Russian forces faced strong resistance and failed to take over the capital. As a result, Russia changed its focus to the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.

Today, after more than three years of fighting, a fifth of Ukraine’s territory remains occupied by Russian troops.

    Is the War Ending Soon?

The United States was Ukraine’s strongest ally throughout the conflict. It provided military aid, weapons, and financial support. However, in recent months, the U.S. has opened direct talks with Russia to seek a peaceful solution.

So far, there have been few signs of progress. During the recent Easter holiday, Russia announced a 30-hour ceasefire, but violations were reported on both sides. The short truce did not lead to any lasting peace.

    What Is the World Saying?

Many countries, including Nepal, have called for peace and respect for international law. The United Nations and other global organizations continue to push for dialogue.

Military experts believe the war has reached a difficult stage. Neither side is willing to give up, and the front lines have moved slowly in recent months.

According to the United Nations, thousands of civilians have been killed, and millions have fled their homes since the conflict began. The war has also damaged the world economy, increasing prices of food, fuel, and essential goods in many countries.

What Lies Ahead for Ukraine and Russia?

As talks continue behind closed doors, both Ukraine and Russia are preparing for further battles. Ukraine is hoping for more support from its allies, while Russia wants to strengthen its hold on the territories it controls.

The situation remains uncertain. Peace still seems far away, but international pressure for negotiations continues to grow.
