Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 16E, marking a major shift in design and features for the popular smartphone brand. With a starting price of $599.99, the iPhone 16E is a successor to the iPhone SE, but it comes with a host of new upgrades, including a new design, the latest A18 chip, and powerful AI features. Most notably, Apple has decided to retire the home button and its classic Touch ID system. Instead, the iPhone 16E adopts a modern Face ID-enabled notch.

Goodbye Touch ID, Hello Face ID

One of the most significant changes in the iPhone 16E is the removal of the traditional home button and Touch ID. Instead, users will now rely on Face ID for unlocking their phone and making payments. The iPhone 16E takes on a design similar to the iPhone 14, with a notch that houses the front-facing camera required for Face ID. This design is a step away from the Dynamic Island notch, found in the iPhone 16 series.

This change marks the end of an era for Apple. The home button has been an iconic feature of the iPhone since its first release in 2007. However, Apple’s shift to Face ID signals a future focused on biometric security and improved facial recognition technology.

    A Modern, Sleek Display

The iPhone 16E comes with a 6.06-inch OLED display, slightly smaller than the standard 6.12-inch iPhone 16. Despite its slightly smaller size, the 16E is not significantly different from the regular iPhone 16. In fact, the 16E is only 0.1mm narrower and 0.7mm shorter than the standard model. It’s clear that Apple is moving away from producing much smaller phones and is opting for a more uniform screen size across its lineup.

The OLED display provides vibrant colors and deep contrasts, making it one of the most beautiful screens on an iPhone at this price point. While it may not feature the ProMotion display seen in the iPhone 16 Pro models, it still offers an excellent viewing experience for everyday users.

    Performance That Packs a Punch

The iPhone 16E is equipped with the latest A18 chipset, which is the same powerful chip found in the iPhone 16. This means the iPhone 16E is capable of handling everything from gaming to heavy multitasking without any lag. More importantly, the A18 chip enables support for Apple Intelligence, the suite of advanced AI tools designed to improve your iPhone experience.

Apple Intelligence includes features like notification summaries, which automatically organize and prioritize your notifications. This is a feature that even the non-Pro iPhone 15 cannot support. With at least 8GB of RAM (likely), the iPhone 16E delivers exceptional performance, making it one of the most powerful non-Pro iPhones available.

In addition to AI features, the 16E comes with a minimum of 128GB of storage, making it a significant upgrade from previous models that started with just 64GB. This storage bump gives users more space for apps, photos, and videos, without the worry of running out of room too quickly.

    Single Camera, No MagSafe

The iPhone 16E features a single 48-megapixel rear camera, which is a significant downgrade from the multiple camera setups found on the higher-end iPhone 16 models. While the 16E may lack some of the advanced camera capabilities like ultra-wide lenses or telephoto zoom, it still offers excellent photo quality for everyday use. The camera performs well in various lighting conditions and delivers sharp, clear images.

However, it’s important to note that the iPhone 16E does not support MagSafe accessories, which have become a popular addition to recent iPhone models. Additionally, the 16E supports only Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W, a slower rate than the 25W wireless charging available on the Pro models. While this may not be an issue for many users, it is worth considering if fast wireless charging is a priority for you.

A Shift to USB-C and a New Modem

In a move that aligns with European regulations, Apple has swapped out the Lightning port for a USB-C port. This change was expected, as the European Union has required all mobile devices to use USB-C for charging. This change is designed to reduce electronic waste and create a universal charging standard across all devices.

Perhaps the most interesting change in the iPhone 16E is the introduction of Apple’s own modem. For years, Apple has relied on Qualcomm’s modems for its iPhones. However, with the iPhone 16E, Apple has finally rolled out a modem that it developed in-house. The success of this modem could have significant implications for future iPhone models, as it could signal that Apple is ready to fully take control of its connectivity components, moving away from third-party suppliers.

    Availability and Pricing

The iPhone 16E is available for preorder starting at $599. While this is a significant price increase from the $429 iPhone SE from 2022, the 16E offers much more storage in the base model (128GB), a modern design, and improved performance. It will begin shipping on February 28th, making it a hotly anticipated release for Apple fans.

In conclusion, the iPhone 16E marks a new era for Apple, as it embraces Face ID, powerful performance, and a more modern design at a lower price than its flagship models. If you’re looking for a phone that offers many of the latest iPhone features without the high-end price tag, the iPhone 16E is worth considering. Whether the new modem and AI capabilities live up to expectations remains to be seen, but Apple’s ambitious direction for this new device is clear.
