A California dog missing for five years has finally returned home after being found thousands of miles away in Michigan.
Choco, a dog from Antelope in Sacramento County, vanished from his neighborhood in 2021. Despite ongoing searches, his family could not locate him.
“He disappeared from the neighborhood and the owner kept searching, but could not find him,” said Cindy from Helping Paws and Claws, the animal rescue group that helped bring Choco home.
Choco was discovered near Detroit, Michigan, tied to a fence. How he traveled over 2,000 miles remains a mystery. The Lincoln Park Animal Shelter took him in, provided medical care, and ensured his vaccinations were up to date.
His return was made possible by a microchip, a simple yet powerful tool that helped track him after years of separation.
“As a retired animal control officer, I have always stressed the importance of microchipping pets,” Cindy said. “Choco’s story proves that microchips work. This is why he is coming home today.”
The reunion also relied on the kindness of strangers. Pam, a supporter, donated her SkyMiles so Choco could fly home.
“I contacted Penny before my husband to see if it was okay to use our miles to fly Penny and the dog,” Pam said.
After the flight and a short drive, Choco was back with his family in Antelope. His owners had almost given up hope of seeing him again.
Choco’s owner, Patricia, explained that he had a history of slipping out of homes.
“The reason he would get out a lot is because he escaped often with his previous family,” Patricia said. “After five years, he finally got out and disappeared.”
Patricia recalled her shock when she received the call about Choco’s discovery.
“I said, ‘You mean Lincoln, California?’ The reply was, ‘No, Lincoln, Michigan,’” she said.
Choco’s journey remains a mystery, but his safe return highlights the importance of pet microchips and community support.
“Microchip your dogs,” Patricia urged. “With the holidays and extreme weather, a story like mine can be your story too.”
Helping Paws and Claws continues to advocate for pet safety and awareness, encouraging owners to register microchips and never lose hope in finding lost pets.
Choco’s story is a reminder that with modern tools and compassionate helpers, even long-lost pets can find their way home.
