Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, says he will spend less money on politics. He told a reporter that he thinks he has done enough. Musk said he does not see a good reason to spend on politics right now. But he said he might spend money again if needed.

Musk spent about $290 million in the 2024 elections. He only backed Donald Trump after the July assassination attempt on Trump. This happened after a hard time for Musk’s main company, Tesla. Tesla’s profits dropped 71% from the year before.

Musk also said his work in politics hurt his businesses. He said it made running his companies harder. But he said there is no going back now. Musk said he wants to make the government work better.

His political spending caused some problems. A recent poll showed more people disapproved of Musk. Some politicians said his help did not always work. In Wisconsin, some Republican candidates said Musk’s support hurt them.

Local leaders did not want ads saying a candidate was backed by Musk. They thought it would make voters less likely to vote for them. So Musk may be stepping back to protect his business.

At the same time, Democrats used Musk in their campaign plan. They tried to make him look like a problem for Republicans. If Musk stops spending, Democrats will need a new plan.

Musk is a unique person. He believes in big ideas. He wants humans to be “transhuman” and live on Mars. He thinks computers in brains and space travel are real goals. If the government stops his plans, he might join politics again.

Some people worry about Musk’s political moves. They say he uses government workers to help his projects. He also fires people who disagree with him. For example, in East Tennessee, women who helped special needs people lost jobs after Musk’s changes.

A Congressman said Musk is a private citizen. He can join politics if he wants. But no one can spend as much money as Musk does. Republicans will now need money from other donors.

The panel talked about Musk’s relationship with Donald Trump. Musk backed Trump after the assassination attempt. But Trump’s policies, like tariffs and cutting electric car credits, did not always help Musk’s business.

Trump said he supports electric cars only because Musk endorsed him. But now Musk wants to end some electric car tax credits Trump once backed.

Some guests think Musk is serious about stepping back. He is focusing on his business again. He wants to stop hurting Republicans. Others think Trump may not want Musk around anymore. Musk’s politics gave Trump bad headlines.

One guest said Trump does not like having someone who causes problems. So Musk stepping back may help Trump. It is not clear if Musk will return to politics soon.

The panel disagreed on whether Trump pushed Musk away. Some said if Trump pushed him out, Trump would brag about it. They think this is a polite break between two powerful men.

Many said Musk is still a respected businessman. He is one of the most successful ever. But some young people who liked him now see him less well.

Musk used to be cool for electric cars and rockets. But his politics made him less popular. If Musk focuses on cars and rockets again, he might be liked more.

For now, Musk’s message is clear: he will spend less on politics. He will focus on his companies. He says he has done enough in politics for now. But if needed, he might help again.

This comes when Musk faces business problems and politics. It shows how big money in politics can be hard. Even the richest man has limits on his power.

Musk’s political story is not over. But for now, the richest man is stepping back from politics.
