A 4-year-old Alabama boy was found dead on January 2 after a search that drew local attention. Authorities confirmed that his dog, named Buck, was found alive nearby.

Johnathan Everett Boley, also called “John John,” was discovered about two miles from his father’s home in Walker County. The boy had been reported missing on Wednesday after being last seen around 11:30 a.m. near Highway 195 in Jasper. At the time, he was wearing a yellow Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants, and PAW Patrol shoes.

Officials said Johnathan was playing outside with his brother and the family dog when he went missing. Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith said, “The brother said that the dog and his brother went across the fence line.”

The discovery of Johnathan’s body has left the community in shock. Sheriff Smith spoke at a press conference on Friday, expressing deep sadness. “Like so many of you across our community… we’re devastated. Johnathan was an adventurous boy and he loved the outdoors,” he said.

Authorities emphasized that the search faced challenges because of potential safety hazards at the Boley family property. Johnathan’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, has been charged with unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device and two counts of chemical endangerment of a child. Sheriff Smith clarified that these charges are unrelated to Johnathan’s disappearance.

“The father has been charged. It has nothing to do with the missing child, it’s something totally separate, but it is a factor hindering our search,” Smith explained on December 31. Authorities had to handle explosive devices found on the property before completing a thorough search of the home.

Family circumstances provide additional context. Johnathan’s parents are separated, and he had moved with his mother to Florida about a year ago. He was visiting his father in Alabama for the holidays.

Local law enforcement and volunteers joined in the search once Johnathan was reported missing. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirmed the case on Wednesday, and the search involved multiple teams combing the area around Highway 195.

The community has responded with an outpouring of grief and support. Residents expressed shock over the tragic news and shared memories of Johnathan as a playful and curious child. Social media posts highlighted the family’s loss and urged safety awareness for young children playing outdoors.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the boy’s death. While foul play has not been reported in connection to the father’s charges, police say they are carefully examining all evidence from the scene.

Johnathan’s surviving dog, Buck, was found unharmed and remains with authorities. The dog’s recovery offers a small comfort amid the tragedy and has drawn attention from local residents and animal welfare supporters.

Sheriff Smith encouraged the public to remain vigilant and watch for any unusual activity in neighborhoods to help prevent similar incidents. “This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved. Families should always supervise young children, especially when pets and outdoor areas are involved,” he said.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought in connection with Johnathan’s disappearance. They also urged the public to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

The tragic loss of Johnathan Everett Boley is a reminder of the importance of child safety and community vigilance. Local authorities hope that sharing updates about the case can help families stay informed and prevent similar accidents in the future.
