A strong tornado hit the U.S. on Friday night, killing at least 27 people and injuring many others. The storm struck the states of Kentucky and Missouri, causing major damage. More deaths may be reported as rescue teams continue to search for survivors.

The tornado touched down just after midnight and left a trail of destruction. Many homes were destroyed. Trees were uprooted. Power lines were brought down. Emergency workers are still working to help the people trapped under debris.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear shared the news in a post on social media site X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, May 17. He said that 18 people had died in his state alone. He added that the damage was still being assessed and that the situation could get worse.

In Missouri, seven people have been confirmed dead. Local officials said that many homes collapsed during the storm. Some people are still trapped under the wreckage. Emergency rescue teams are trying to get them out as fast as they can.

Two other nearby states also felt the storm. Two people died there as well. Officials have warned that the total number of deaths may still rise.

Laurel County in Kentucky was hit very hard. Many people were hurt in that area. Police officer John Root said that rescue teams were busy helping the injured. He said they were doing their best to reach the worst-hit areas.

In Missouri’s St. Louis city, Mayor Cara Spencer confirmed that five people died there. She said that over 5,000 homes were damaged by the tornado. Many families are now without shelter and are waiting for help.

Another tornado struck Scott County, about 209 kilometers south of St. Louis. Two people died there. Many more were hurt, and many homes were also damaged.

Officials are urging people to stay safe and to follow safety guidelines. They are asking people to avoid traveling in the storm-hit areas unless necessary.

The full damage is not yet known. Weather experts say the tornado was powerful and moved quickly through several towns. They believe it may take days to learn the full scale of the destruction.

The National Weather Service has warned that more storms may follow in the coming days. People in the affected states are being told to stay alert and watch for warnings.

Many families have lost their homes. Schools, hospitals, and shops have also been damaged. Relief teams are working hard to provide food, water, and shelter to those in need.

Governor Beshear said that the state will do all it can to help the victims. He said they are working with rescue teams, police, and local officials to help those affected.

Residents are sharing photos and videos online that show the storm’s damage. Many buildings are in ruins. Roads are blocked. Emergency vehicles are seen across the damaged towns.

This is one of the deadliest tornadoes to hit the region in recent years. People are mourning the loss of their loved ones and trying to rebuild their lives.

As of now, emergency response teams are still active. The focus remains on finding survivors, clearing debris, and helping families get back on their feet.
