Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has responded to a video that recently resurfaced in which his daughter, Jane Eddidiong Ufot, made accusations related to the death of her mother, the governor’s late wife. The video was originally recorded last year, shortly after Mrs. Patience Eno passed away. Governor Eno described the recent appearance of the footage as a political tactic by his detractors to undermine him and his administration.
The governor made his comments during a birthday celebration for former Deputy Governor Obong Nsima Ekere in Uyo, where Jane and other family members were present. He explained that the video’s return at this time is connected to political motives as it coincides with the second anniversary of his wife’s passing and the celebration of his administration’s achievements. He stressed that his family remains intact despite the challenges.
Jane Eddidiong Ufot currently serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Safety, and Environment. At the event, Governor Eno pointed to her presence with her husband as evidence of family unity and appealed to the public to avoid reopening painful memories. He expressed that losing his wife was very difficult for the family and asked for respect during this sensitive time.
The video shows Jane addressing her father directly and expressing deep emotional pain. She suggested that her mother was sacrificed and implied ongoing threats to her family. These claims have caused public concern and fueled speculation. The governor’s wife, Mrs. Patience Eno, died peacefully in hospital on September 26, 2024, after an illness, according to official statements from Government House in Uyo.
Following Mrs. Eno’s death, Governor Eno appointed his eldest daughter, Lady Helen Obareki, to take on the role of First Lady and continue the family’s social initiatives through the “Golden Initiatives For All” program. At the same time, rumors about a second wife have circulated, adding further complexity to the political situation.
Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to his duties and the people of Akwa Ibom. He emphasized that families should not be targets in political battles and reassured that his family is doing well. He urged those sharing the video to respect his family’s privacy and focus on the work of governance.
This incident highlights the difficulties public officials face when private family matters become political issues. Governor Eno’s response shows his determination to remain focused despite personal challenges.
