Iloilo City, Philippines – In a heartwarming initiative, the Iloilo City government has introduced a travel program designed to allow senior citizens to experience the city’s beauty as tourists. Organized by the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), the program aims to provide elderly residents with a unique opportunity to explore Iloilo’s rich heritage and culture.
First Batch of Seniors Embark on Guided Tour
The program officially kicked off on Thursday, with 15 senior citizens—officers of the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines–Iloilo City chapter—participating in the inaugural tour. The half-day excursion took them to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Jaro Cathedral and Belfry, Molo Mansion, Molo Plaza, and Molo Church.
For many of the participants, this was a rare opportunity to visit these historical sites. Ofelia Bataican, a 77-year-old participant, shared her excitement: “We feel valued and happy because the city government gave us this opportunity. Many seniors do not have the chance to explore the city on their own.”
Promoting Heritage and Local Tourism
The initiative is not just about sightseeing—it also serves as a way to foster appreciation for Iloilo’s cultural heritage. Mathilde Treñas, Special Assistant to Mayor Jerry Treñas, emphasized the importance of this program in promoting local tourism while improving the well-being of elderly residents.
“Many seniors rarely leave their homes, so this gives them something to look forward to. Our itinerary mainly includes heritage houses, open spaces, and churches in Iloilo City,” she explained.
Regular Thursday Tours for More Participants
OSCA head Eleanor Gregorio confirmed that the city government plans to accommodate around 20 senior citizens every Thursday. Interested individuals must register with OSCA and present a valid senior citizen ID as proof of residency.
“Please spread the word so that more seniors can take part in this meaningful activity,” Gregorio urged.
A Step Towards Inclusive Tourism
Iloilo’s travel program for seniors is a testament to the city’s commitment to inclusivity and social welfare. By giving the elderly a chance to engage in cultural and recreational activities, the initiative enhances their quality of life while celebrating Iloilo’s history and tourism.
