Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has announced five urgent measures aimed at revitalizing the country’s struggling tourism sector. This initiative is part of the government’s large stimulus package of 157 billion baht designed to boost the economy and make Thailand a leading global travel destination again.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Thailand’s economy, supporting millions of jobs and generating billions of dollars in revenue each year. After the COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp decline in visitor numbers, the sector is now showing signs of recovery. During a recent meeting at Government House, Paetongtarn emphasized that tourism must take the lead in driving economic growth in the coming months.

The five measures ordered by the prime minister include improving infrastructure such as airports and roads to make travel easier and more convenient for tourists. The government will also promote premium tourism by attracting affluent travelers from Europe and the Americas who are seeking high-quality and unique experiences. Supporting small local businesses like hotels, restaurants, and tour operators through financial aid and training is another key step in the plan.

The government plans to enhance health and safety standards across all tourist sites to ensure traveler confidence. In addition, new marketing campaigns will be launched to promote Thailand’s culture, natural beauty, and attractions worldwide. Although the total number of visitors is slightly lower than before, tourism revenue is rising due to the influx of wealthier travelers who spend more on luxury services.

The prime minister called on all government agencies to adapt quickly to changing traveler expectations and focus on quality over quantity. The government’s efforts also include expanding new travel trends such as wellness, eco-tourism, and cultural tourism. These actions are expected to improve the overall experience for visitors and support a sustainable recovery.

Tourism contributes about 20 percent of Thailand’s gross domestic product and supports related industries such as retail, food, and transportation. The stimulus package will help reopen businesses, train workers, and upgrade tourist infrastructure to meet international standards.

Despite the positive outlook, challenges remain. Global inflation and regional political tensions could affect travel plans. Competition from neighboring countries is also increasing, making it essential for Thailand to continue improving its tourism offerings.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s urgent five-point plan highlights the government’s commitment to reviving the tourism industry. By focusing on infrastructure, premium tourism, local business support, safety, and global promotion, Thailand aims to regain its status as a top travel destination.
