Polish citizens went to the polls on Sunday in a highly anticipated runoff election to choose a new president. The outcome will help define the country’s political path and its future relationship with the European Union. Voting started at 7 a.m. local time and will continue until 9 p.m., with exit polls expected shortly after and final results likely to be announced on Monday.

This election comes after a close first round held on May 18. In that round, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski led the vote with just over 31 percent. His main rival, conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, followed closely with nearly 30 percent. Eleven other candidates were eliminated. Now the two leading candidates face off in a final vote that will shape Poland’s direction for years to come.

Trzaskowski is known for his pro-European Union stance and his progressive policies. He has served as mayor of Warsaw and is seen by many voters as someone who wants to move Poland toward more democratic and liberal values. Nawrocki, on the other hand, is a conservative figure supported by the right-wing Law and Justice party. He has built his campaign on national pride, traditional values, and a cautious approach to the European Union.

With current President Andrzej Duda finishing his second and final term, the new president will hold key powers. One of the most important is the ability to veto laws. This means the winner could either help or block the efforts of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist government. A victory for Trzaskowski could lead to smoother cooperation between the president and parliament. A Nawrocki win could bring more political tension and slow down policy changes.

Many voters see this election as a choice between two different futures. Trzaskowski has promised to restore judicial independence, make abortion laws more flexible, and work closely with Poland’s European allies. He wants to reduce political conflict and improve the image of Poland abroad. His supporters hope he can bring more stability and progress.

Nawrocki has promised to defend what he calls traditional Polish values. He believes that Poland should not always follow the direction of the EU and should instead focus on its own culture, religion, and identity. He often speaks about national pride and Christian beliefs. He also supports strong security policies and has been compared to U.S. conservative leaders.

Nawrocki’s campaign has faced some controversy. Media reports have linked him to violent events from his past and to criminal groups. He has denied any wrongdoing and said his past actions were misunderstood. Despite the reports, his popularity among conservative voters remains strong. Many people see the claims as attempts to damage his image during the election.

On the streets of Warsaw, voters had different opinions. Some chose Trzaskowski because they believe he is more experienced and more likely to lead the country in a peaceful and modern direction. Others chose Nawrocki because they believe he will protect Polish traditions and keep foreign influence in check. The vote has shown how deeply divided the country is, especially between urban and rural voters and between younger and older generations.

The outcome of this election will not only affect Polish laws and politics but also international relations. European leaders are watching closely. Poland is one of the largest countries in the EU and plays an important role in European security and economic policy. A pro-EU president could lead to better cooperation with Brussels, while a nationalist president might cause more conflicts.

The president also plays a role in foreign policy, including relations with the United States and neighboring countries. In recent years, Poland has had both support and disagreements with the EU and other global partners. The new president’s approach could influence Poland’s role in the region and its place in future international discussions.

With high voter interest and a very close race, the final result may be decided by a small number of votes. Turnout is expected to be high, and many people believe this is one of the most important elections in recent years. It is not just a choice between two people, but between two visions for the country’s future.
