Elon Musk has stepped down from his role in the Trump administration. He made the announcement on Wednesday, May 28. Musk is the CEO of Tesla. He also owns the social media site X. He is one of the richest people in the world.

A White House official spoke to Reuters. The official said Musk’s exit will begin that same night. Musk also posted the news on X.

In his post, Musk wrote that his time as a Special Government Employee had ended. He thanked President Trump for the chance to serve. He said the Department of Government Efficiency, also called DOGE, will stay strong. He hopes it becomes a new way of life in government.

Musk joined the Trump team in January 2025. His main goal was to cut U.S. government spending. He wanted to save $1 trillion from the federal budget. Musk led DOGE, a group formed to make the government work better and spend less.

But so far, the group has saved only $175 billion. That equals about $1,088.96 for each American. These numbers come from DOGE’s official website.

Musk’s job was for 130 days. It was set to end on May 30. The White House said that DOGE will keep going even after Musk leaves. The group will still try to build a smaller and better government.

Musk’s move comes just after he shared strong views about a new budget plan. This plan is called the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” It is one of Trump’s main ideas. The bill would extend tax cuts made in 2017. It also adds work rules for food help and health aid programs.

Musk said he was not happy with the bill. He said it did not match his plans to cut costs and grow efficiency. His views were clear. This may be one reason he chose to step down.

Musk did not get paid for his role. His job was part-time and focused on advice. Still, he had big influence on DOGE’s work. Many of his ideas shaped the group’s actions and goals.

Supporters say Musk brought fresh ideas. He wanted to cut waste and use more tech. He talked about smart tools and better systems. Some people liked this. Others said the ideas were too fast and hard to do.

With Musk gone, it is not clear who will lead DOGE next. The White House has not named a new head. Still, officials say the group’s work will go on.

Musk has not said what comes next for him. He still runs Tesla and SpaceX. He also works on X and other projects. Some think he will now focus more on his own companies.

This is not Musk’s first time in U.S. politics. In the past, he gave advice to other leaders. He has often shared his views on public issues. But this was one of his most active roles in government.

As he leaves, Musk says he is proud. He thinks DOGE made a good start. But he knows the $1 trillion goal is still far away.

He ended his post with hope. He said DOGE will live on. He believes a smaller and smarter government is still possible. His time in the Trump team is over, but his ideas may stay for a long time.
