President Donald Trump is poised to gain political leverage regardless of who wins New York City’s mayoral race.
If Zohran Mamdani wins, Trump gains a hard-left target to criticize and could use federal authority to challenge city policies. If Andrew Cuomo returns, Trump gains leverage over an old rival facing potential federal scrutiny.
Trump has already influenced the race. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams’ federal corruption charges were dropped this year after aligning with the White House, which deepened his unpopularity and removed him from the contest.
“Trump is in a good position no matter what happens on Nov. 4,” said former state lawmaker Rev. Ruben Diaz. “Any one of them will have a losing battle against Trump. He is an 800-pound gorilla.”
The race highlights a Democratic struggle between moderate Cuomo and left-leaning Mamdani. The next mayor inherits a city facing soaring rents, grocery costs, and childcare expenses, but Trump’s federal influence is expected to dominate attention. He could impose restrictions on city funding, federal programs, and even deploy federal authorities if desired.
Cuomo, who resigned as governor amid a harassment scandal, claims experience and a track record of challenging Trump. He also warns that Mamdani is inexperienced and vulnerable to federal pressure.
Trump has criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “liddle communist” and threatening to cut aid to the city if Mamdani wins. Some congressional allies have even discussed deporting Mamdani, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Uganda.
Mamdani pledges to resist Trump’s influence while focusing on affordability and city issues. Both Mamdani and Trump have loyal bases, signaling a potential national stage for conflict.
Longshot Republican Curtis Sliwa has avoided direct confrontation with Trump. He has urged negotiation and respect, acknowledging the president’s political clout in the city. “He has all the cards,” Sliwa said. “You don’t have to buckle or bow to Donald Trump. But you have to acknowledge that he’s in charge.”
With the election days away, the NYC mayoral contest is set to reinforce Trump’s influence over the city regardless of the outcome.
