Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone for two hours on Monday, May 19. The call took place at 5 p.m. local time. The main topic was the ongoing war in Ukraine. This news was first shared by Russia’s state media and later reported by Al Jazeera.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the phone call was aimed at finding a way to stop the war. Both leaders discussed steps toward peace. They also talked about the chance of a future peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. The Kremlin said that Russia is open to working with Ukraine if both sides agree on fair terms.

During the call, Vladimir Putin said that a short-term ceasefire could happen if an agreement is made. He shared that the talk with Donald Trump was open, useful, and very helpful. Putin also said that Russia supports ending the war, but any deal must be fair for all.

Putin thanked Trump for his role in bringing Russia and Ukraine back to direct talks. He said that the United States played a big part in restarting the peace talks. He also said Russia is ready to help prepare a draft plan for a possible ceasefire.

After the phone call, Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social. He said that the call with Putin was “excellent.” He added that Russia and Ukraine may soon begin talks for a ceasefire. Trump hopes these talks will end the war once and for all.

Trump also wrote that both sides know what’s best when it comes to peace terms. He plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next. Trump also said he will reach out to NATO leaders about the issue.

Trump has shown interest in ending the Ukraine war if he becomes president again. In past statements, he said he could solve the war “quickly” if elected. Monday’s phone call with Putin is seen as part of that goal.

This phone conversation is one of the longest known talks between the two leaders since Trump left office. It came at a time when the war in Ukraine has gone on for more than two years. Thousands of people have died, and millions have had to leave their homes.

The news of the call has drawn attention worldwide. Some experts say this could be the first real step toward peace in Ukraine. Others warn that any deal must include Ukraine’s voice and not just talks between major powers.

So far, Ukraine has not given an official reply to the phone call. However, President Zelensky has always said that any peace deal must include the return of lost land and justice for war crimes.

NATO leaders have also not shared any comment yet. But in the past, NATO has backed Ukraine and said that Russia must end its invasion.

The world now waits to see what comes next. Will this phone call lead to real peace talks? Or will it be just another attempt without results?

For now, Putin and Trump both seem hopeful. They believe talks can bring an end to the war. The next steps will depend on how Ukraine and its allies respond.

As the war continues to affect millions, a small step toward peace may have just begun with this two-hour call.
