A community celebration in West Valley City turned tragic Sunday night when a shooting at a local carnival left three people dead. Among the victims were an 8-month-old infant, a 41-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old man. Authorities say the violence began with an argument between two groups at the WestFest event in Centennial Park.

According to police, officers on duty at the event saw the dispute unfold around 9:40 p.m. As they moved in to calm the situation, a 16-year-old boy from one of the groups pulled out a gun and opened fire. Officers reacted quickly, and one returned fire, but no one was hit by the officer’s shot.

The infant and the woman, who was described as a bystander, were struck by the teen’s gunfire. Both died at the scene. The 18-year-old man, who was part of one of the involved groups, was also shot and later died from his injuries.

Two more teenagers, a 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, were hit in the arm. Officials have not confirmed if they were part of the groups involved. Their current conditions are still unknown.

The 16-year-old shooter was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities have not released his name because of his age. He is now facing serious charges in connection with the triple homicide.

The incident shocked residents of West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City with a population of about 134,000. Community members expressed sorrow and concern over the loss of innocent lives, especially the death of the baby.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the argument between the two groups. They are also reviewing footage from the carnival and speaking with witnesses to gather more information.

Police are asking anyone who was at the event and saw what happened to come forward. They are especially interested in videos or photos taken during the time of the shooting.

WestFest is an annual event meant to bring the community together with food, games, and music. The event was immediately shut down following the incident. City officials are now reviewing safety procedures for future public gatherings.

City leaders said they are committed to helping the families of the victims and are offering counseling services for those affected. They also plan to work closely with local schools and youth programs to prevent future violence.

This tragic Utah carnival shooting highlights ongoing concerns about youth violence and gun access among teenagers. Community groups are calling for more support programs and stricter safety measures at public events.

Authorities have not released further details about the gun used or how the 16-year-old obtained it. The investigation remains active, and more updates are expected in the coming days.

The city has promised full transparency in handling the case and ensuring justice for the victims. Residents are being urged to remain calm as officials continue their work.
