Russia has launched a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine, defying U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing significant banking sanctions and tariffs on Moscow. The overnight barrage, which included ballistic and cruise missile strikes, targeted multiple regions, leaving destruction and casualties in its wake.
Trump Urges Peace Talks as Russia Continues Attacks
On Friday, Trump took to Truth Social to urge both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate a ceasefire. He warned that he was considering “large-scale banking sanctions, sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.”
Despite these warnings, the Russian military intensified its assault, launching 145 drones—including Shahed attack UAVs—and multiple missiles at key Ukrainian locations.
Heavy Casualties and Widespread Damage
Ukraine reported significant civilian casualties in the attacks. Vadym Filashkin, the regional head of Donetsk, confirmed that at least 20 people were killed, and 43 others were injured. The town of Dobropillya, located northwest of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, was among the hardest hit.
The missile strikes also targeted key infrastructure in the regions of Kharkiv, Odesa, and Poltava. Ukraine’s largest energy provider reported that facilities in Odesa were struck once again, causing further disruptions. Additionally, Naftogaz, the country’s leading gas company, had to halt all operations due to repeated attacks on its facilities.
Ukrainian Forces Struggle Amid U.S. Intelligence Cut-Off
Ukraine’s military reported intercepting 79 drones and a cruise missile, but the sheer scale of the attack left many areas vulnerable. Major Volodymyr Omelyan, from Ukraine’s Armed Forces, described the situation as dire, noting that civilians were being harmed daily.
The latest assault comes amid reports that Washington has revoked Ukraine’s access to satellite imagery and intelligence-sharing resources. This decision, following a tense Oval Office meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, has left Ukraine struggling to track Russian military movements.
Trump’s Controversial Stance on the Russia-Ukraine War
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump expressed frustration with Ukraine, stating that negotiating with Russia might be “easier” and suggesting that Putin “wants to end the war.” When asked whether Russia was exploiting the U.S. intelligence freeze, Trump responded, “I actually think he is doing what anybody else would do.”
His remarks have drawn criticism from U.S. allies, as well as Ukrainian officials, who argue that limiting aid and intelligence-sharing has left their forces vulnerable.
Ukraine Appeals for Continued Western Support
As Russia escalates its offensive, Ukraine has urged its Western allies to maintain military aid and intelligence-sharing. The halt in U.S. support has prompted European nations to explore alternative means of assisting Ukraine, including the possible deployment of additional fighter jets for defense operations.
Despite the challenges, Ukraine remains resolute. “We will continue to defend our land,” said Omelyan. “Even without full intelligence, we will find ways to resist.”
