Rangers have secured a place in the Champions League play-offs despite a 2-1 defeat against Viktoria Plzen in the second leg of the third qualifying round. The Ibrox side had carried a commanding three-goal advantage from the first leg, which proved enough to progress to the next stage.

The match at the Doosan Arena in Plzen began with Rangers defending their lead from the first leg. Early pressure from Viktoria Plzen tested the Scottish champions, but they held firm until the 41st minute. A defensive lapse by Jefte allowed Amar Memic to send a cross into the box, where Rafiu Durosinmi fired the opening goal past goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Rangers’ troubles grew when striker Cyriel Dessers appeared to suffer a serious knee injury, forcing him off the pitch. Despite the setback, the team responded positively. Substitute Danilo delivered a precise pass to Lyall Cameron, who scored his first goal for Rangers, leveling the tie on the night and reinforcing their aggregate advantage.

Even after Cameron’s strike, Viktoria Plzen continued to press for a comeback. Rangers faced several late threats, with Butland making a series of impressive saves. However, Svetozar Markovic managed a header in the closing stages, giving the home team a consolation goal and sealing a 2-1 victory for Plzen on the night.

Rangers head coach Russell Martin emphasized the need for greater aggression and improved decision-making. He acknowledged moments of strong play but criticized lapses that allowed Plzen to create chances. Martin noted that while the team progressed, there is still work to be done, particularly in defending set-pieces and maintaining possession under pressure.

Martin also praised substitutes Kieran Dowell, Nadim Bajrami, and Danilo, highlighting Danilo’s calm control and accurate passes that helped Rangers navigate the press and create scoring opportunities. Despite occasional turnovers, Martin stressed that the team’s aggressive approach in the opponent’s half was encouraging, though finer details need attention.

Looking ahead, Rangers now face Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs. The first leg will take place at Ibrox on Tuesday, August 19, followed by the return fixture in Belgium a week later. Victory over Club Brugge would secure Rangers a spot in the prestigious and financially rewarding League Phase of Europe’s top club competition.

Former player and pundit Kris Boyd noted that while Rangers successfully progressed, the defensive errors that led to both goals against Plzen are a concern. He highlighted Lyall Cameron’s first goal as a positive moment and praised the team’s early work in the match for keeping Plzen at bay despite a few dangerous chances.

Rangers now prepare for another crucial test in the Champions League, knowing that maintaining defensive discipline and consistent attacking play will be key against a strong Club Brugge side. Fans will hope that the squad can stay healthy and build momentum from their first-leg performance to secure a spot in Europe’s elite tournament.

Rangers’ advancement demonstrates the importance of a strong first-leg performance, resilience under pressure, and the ability to respond positively to injuries and setbacks. With a mix of experienced leaders like captain James Tavernier and emerging talents such as Lyall Cameron, the team looks poised to challenge in the upcoming play-offs and beyond.
