More Romanians are now choosing travel insurance when planning their holidays, showing a clear rise in risk awareness and safety planning. New data from Groupama, a major insurance provider, reveals that 1.1 million people in Romania were insured through the company in 2025. This marks a steady rise in the number of insured travellers over the past four years.
The trend reflects a major shift in how Romanians think about travel. They are no longer just booking flights and hotels—they are also preparing for unexpected problems. From trip delays to medical emergencies, many are now planning for all kinds of risks before leaving home.
Most of the travel policies sold by Groupama were for leisure trips. Over 90% of family travel insurance and about 70% of individual policies were for vacations. European countries remain the most popular destinations for Romanians, with most trips lasting between eight and 15 days. However, short trips are also popular. About 35% of individual policies and 32% of family plans were for shorter getaways.
Groupama’s data shows two main types of customers. One group includes younger people under the age of 40. They often travel alone and go on longer holidays. These travellers tend to choose full coverage packages. These often include protection against trip cancellations, luggage loss, flight delays, and sports-related incidents. Interest in high-risk activities such as skiing and water sports has grown, especially during winter and summer. This has led to more people adding extra coverage for those sports.
The second group includes families with travellers aged between 41 and 60. These families often go on car-based holidays and prefer travel insurance that includes air travel issues and roadside help. Their focus is on safety while travelling with loved ones, especially when driving across borders.
The most common extras added to insurance plans reveal what worries travellers the most. Air travel problems, trip cancellations, and injuries during sports are top concerns. Many people also add medical coverage, especially when visiting countries where healthcare costs are high.
Groupama reports that about 60% of claims made by their customers were for medical care received abroad. These included treatment for seasonal illnesses, surgery, and even emergency medical flights back to Romania. The rest of the claims were mostly related to cancelled flights, problems with cars, or other unexpected travel issues.
The steady increase in travel insurance buyers shows that Romanians are becoming more careful travellers. They are planning for the unexpected, rather than leaving things to chance. Whether they are heading to the mountains for winter sports or taking a quick weekend trip abroad, they are making sure they have the right protection.
Younger travellers want full coverage for adventure. Families want safe and smooth travel for everyone. Insurance companies like Groupama are seeing more demand because they offer plans that match these needs.
This rise in travel insurance use also reflects a broader trend: people now value peace of mind while travelling. With unpredictable weather, health risks, and delays becoming more common, insurance is no longer an afterthought. It has become a key part of how Romanians prepare for travel.
