In an age where cyberattacks can cripple nations, the upcoming Netflix political thriller Zero Day explores a worst-case scenario: an unprecedented digital assault on the United States. Starring legendary actor Robert De Niro, the limited series follows a retired and respected U.S. President as he is called back to duty to investigate the catastrophe.

De Niro’s First Leading Role in a TV Series

At 81, De Niro is making history with Zero Day, marking his first time as both the leading actor and executive producer of a television series. He portrays George Mullen, a former President of the United States who is tasked with heading a commission to uncover the source of the devastating cyberattack.

In a recent interview, De Niro explained why he decided to make the leap to television:

“I was looking for something to work on in New York, where I live. My agent introduced me to Eric Newman, and he had an idea. He sent me a treatment, and it sounded good. I was happy to be part of something well-written and relevant to our times.”

Despite playing a former U.S. leader, De Niro emphasized that his character is not based on any specific president.

A Stellar Cast and Acclaimed Creators

The series boasts an impressive team, including Narcos and Griselda executive producer Eric Newman, former NBC News president-turned-screenwriter Noah Oppenheim, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael S. Schmidt. Their expertise in political narratives ensures an authentic and gripping storyline.

Lizzy Caplan (Fleishman Is in Trouble) stars as Alexandra Mullen, a Congresswoman and former First Daughter. Excited to work with De Niro, she shared, “Anybody would race to that opportunity. When I first met with Eric Newman, he told me about the cast he wanted. I didn’t believe he could get all of them—but he did.”

Caplan hinted at her character’s inner conflicts: “Alex has good but misguided intentions. She believes in a balanced society, but good people sometimes make questionable choices.”

    Powerful Women in Zero Day

Acclaimed actress Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights, Nashville) plays Valerie Whitesell, a former Chief of Staff. Reflecting on her role, she said, “Getting to work with De Niro was a bucket-list moment. Plus, this role was different from anything I’ve done before, and I love a challenge.”

Joan Allen (The Bourne series, Room) takes on the role of former First Lady Sheila Mullen. She echoed Britton’s excitement: “It was really about the people involved—Bob in particular. Then I saw the rest of the cast and knew it was going to be special.”

Lesli Linka Glatter, the celebrated director behind Homeland, helms all six episodes. “Lesli is a true leader,” Britton noted. “She worked non-stop for six months, balancing directing and negotiations for the Directors Guild of America.”

Angela Bassett as President Evelyn Mitchell

Angela Bassett joins the cast as Evelyn Mitchell, the President of the United States during the cyber crisis. On playing a Black female president, Bassett reflected on the inspirations behind her role: “Before Kamala Harris took the national stage, there was Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and Stacey Abrams. Their work paved the way.”

On working with De Niro, she added, “It was an absolute honor. He’s a legend, and having the chance to share scenes with him was unforgettable.”

    A Timely Political Thriller

With cyber threats becoming an ever-growing concern, Zero Day presents a gripping exploration of power, responsibility, and digital warfare. The series aims to captivate audiences with high-stakes drama, complex characters, and a narrative that mirrors real-world concerns.

Netflix has yet to announce the official release date, but anticipation is high for this politically charged thriller featuring one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.
