New Delhi, India – Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor and retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions in an official notice issued on Saturday. His appointment takes effect from the date he assumes office.

Das’ tenure will remain co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever comes earlier, as per the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Shaktikanta Das: A Seasoned Bureaucrat with Vast Experience

Shaktikanta Das has had a distinguished career in public service, holding key positions in finance, taxation, and infrastructure at both the central and state levels. He played a crucial role in India’s economic policymaking and represented the country at global platforms such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), G20, BRICS, and SAARC.

In December 2018, Das was appointed as the 25th Governor of the RBI, following the abrupt resignation of Urjit Patel. He served in this role for six years, overseeing crucial financial policies, monetary regulations, and banking reforms. Under his leadership, the RBI took significant measures to stabilize the economy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Global Recognition and Achievements

During his tenure as RBI Governor, Das received widespread acclaim for his leadership. The US-based Global Finance magazine twice ranked him among the world’s top central bankers. His expertise in handling economic crises and financial regulations earned him global recognition.

Before becoming RBI Governor, Das played a pivotal role in India’s financial governance. He was closely associated with the preparation of eight Union Budgets while serving in the Ministry of Finance. His contributions extended to international financial institutions as well—he served as India’s Alternate Governor at the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Development Bank (NDB), and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

    Educational Background and Early Life

Born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Shaktikanta Das completed his schooling at Demonstration Multipurpose School, Bhubaneswar. He later pursued higher education at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in history. His academic foundation in history complemented his analytical and policy-making skills throughout his career.

    Impact of His Appointment

As Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Das is expected to play a key role in shaping policy decisions, advising on economic matters, and ensuring effective governance. Given his extensive experience in public administration and financial policymaking, his appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance economic stability and policy execution at the highest level.

Experts believe Das’ appointment will strengthen the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), particularly in managing economic challenges, financial reforms, and international trade negotiations. His expertise in economic planning and governance could prove vital in navigating India’s economic future.

Shaktikanta Das’ transition from RBI Governor to Principal Secretary to PM Modi marks another milestone in his distinguished career. His leadership in economic policymaking and administrative experience makes him well-suited for this crucial role. As he steps into this new position, all eyes will be on how he influences India’s economic and policy landscape in the coming years.
