Two people have died, and 19 others were hurt after a Mexican Navy ship crashed into the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. The accident took place on Saturday night, May 17, local time.

The news came from Reuters, a British news agency. According to their report, the ship hit the bridge while passing underneath it. The ship’s mast struck the bridge structure, causing damage to the ship and injuring people onboard.

A video that spread online shows the moment the ship’s mast got stuck under the bridge. The ship rocked heavily because of the impact. In the video, sailors dressed in white are seen hanging from a crossbeam on the ship, trying to hold on.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams shared an update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said there were 277 people on the ship. Out of them, 19 got hurt, and two of these injured are in serious condition. Sadly, two people died from their injuries.

One law enforcement officer said the two people who died fell from the mast of the ship. They were taken to the hospital but were declared dead there. After the accident, the ship was moved to Pier 36 in New York for further inspection.

City officials said the crash might have happened due to a mechanical fault in the ship. But they warned that all information is still early and the exact cause is under investigation.

The Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, two major parts of New York City. It was built in 1883 and is an important route for many travelers every day. The bridge is also a famous tourist spot and has appeared in many movies. One famous film, The Dark Knight Rises, shows the Brooklyn Bridge being destroyed.

This accident has shocked many people because the Brooklyn Bridge is a historic and busy landmark. Safety teams and city officials are working to find out what went wrong and to prevent such accidents in the future.

The injured people are receiving medical care, and the city is monitoring their conditions closely. The mayor promised to keep the public informed as the investigation continues.

This tragic event is a reminder of how important safety is for ships passing under bridges and other structures. Officials are calling for careful checks and strict rules to avoid accidents like this.

Many residents and visitors shared their concerns and prayers on social media after the news broke. The Brooklyn Bridge is not only a way to travel but also a symbol of the city’s history and strength.

The investigation will look at the ship’s equipment, the crew’s actions, and the bridge’s condition. Authorities want to know exactly how this happened so they can stop it from happening again.

For now, traffic under the bridge and the nearby area is affected as safety checks and repairs are done. The city is working to reopen the area as soon as it is safe.

The two people who lost their lives are mourned by their families and the city. The community is coming together to support those hurt and to remember the victims.

Officials urge everyone to stay calm and patient while the investigation is ongoing. They also remind boat operators and drivers to follow all safety rules carefully.

As the city waits for answers, this accident remains a sad moment in the long history of the Brooklyn Bridge.
