Kobbie Mainoo finally made an impact for Manchester United after a challenging period under Ruben Amorim. The young midfielder had been placed behind Bruno Fernandes, leaving him without a Premier League start under the Portuguese coach. This limited role left the English talent eager to play regularly and push for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

Despite his desire to move, United blocked his summer transfer, and a January exit looked unlikely. Everything changed when Amorim was sacked, giving Mainoo a fresh start under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

Carrick immediately placed the 20-year-old in the starting lineup for the Manchester derby, and Mainoo delivered an outstanding performance. United defeated their city rivals 2-0, with the scoreline nearly higher if not for marginal offside decisions and a post. Mainoo completed all his long passes and connected with teammates on 91 percent of his attempts. Defensively, he contributed eight key actions, showing his ability on both ends of the pitch.

The Stockport-born midfielder earned praise from Carrick, who said he offered “a strong foundation alongside Case” and highlighted Mainoo’s importance to the team’s performance. Inside sources also revealed that Carrick took time during the week to personally coach Mainoo, offering advice on how to improve and build confidence.

This mentorship appears to have revitalized Mainoo. The young midfielder now has a coach who trusts his abilities, and his performance reflected that confidence. Playing under a former legendary midfielder gives Mainoo the chance to learn and grow, which is critical for his development and United’s hopes of securing Champions League football.

After a difficult start to the season, Mainoo’s display against City could mark the beginning of a more influential role at Old Trafford. With continued guidance and trust from Carrick, the English midfielder looks set to become a key figure in United’s midfield for the remainder of the season.
