Australia’s captain Pat Cummins has explained why Scott Boland, despite his strong performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was not selected for the World Test Championship 2025 Final Playing XI. The decision surprised many fans, given Boland’s recent success as a leading bowler for Australia.

On Tuesday, Australia announced its team for the WTC Final. The squad includes the return of Josh Hazlewood, a veteran fast bowler making his first red-ball appearance in 2025. Boland, who impressed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was left out of the lineup.

For more than ten years, Australia’s fast bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc has been one of the most effective in world cricket. When one of these players is unavailable, others like Scott Boland have stepped in and shown they deserve a permanent place through strong performances.

Pat Cummins said that the team is managing player workloads and considering the age of players when selecting the squad. He noted that Boland had done nothing wrong and that missing this match does not mean the end of his career. Cummins emphasized that many Test matches lie ahead, and the rotation policy helps extend the careers of fast bowlers.

Josh Hazlewood’s return brings experience and stability to the team. His inclusion reflects Australia’s strategy of balancing seasoned players with new talent.

Another player missing from the Playing XI is 19-year-old Sam Konstats. He gained attention during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by performing well against top Indian players. Although young, he has shown maturity and potential on the field. Cummins said Konstats has a long career ahead and that not playing in the final will offer him valuable learning opportunities.

Australia’s approach for the WTC Final focuses on keeping players fit and ready while giving younger players time to develop. This strategy aims to maintain a strong and balanced team for future challenges.
