Malaysian tower runner Soh Wai Ching started 2026 with a stunning record. The world No. 1 athlete became the first to finish the 54-storey Cinda International Financial Centre Run Up in Shanxi, China, in under eight minutes.

Soh completed the race in seven minutes and 49 seconds. He shaved nearly a minute off the previous record of 8:48. China’s Xue Jian Dong, ranked 12th in the world, finished second in 8:01. Former record holder Han Shi Ming took third place in 8:22.

The fourth edition of the Shanxi tower run attracted more than 500 competitors. Soh’s victory marked Malaysia’s first international sports win of the year.

Soh shared his excitement on social media. He said he was thrilled to start the year with a win in China. He also expressed joy at returning home to celebrate with his wife and child.

This record is the latest in a series of achievements for Soh. He has dominated tower running events worldwide and maintains the top ranking in the sport. Experts note that breaking the under-eight-minute barrier in a 54-storey race is a rare feat.

Soh also revealed his 2026 competition schedule. He plans to compete at the Shenzhen Ping An Finance Centre International Vertical Marathon in January. He will run the Taipei 101 Run Up in May, the KL Tower Run Up in June, and The Sky Race at Merdeka 118 in August.

“With these races, I aim to keep my No. 1 ranking through the year,” Soh said.

Tower running is a growing sport where athletes race up tall buildings. Races like the Shanxi Run Up test endurance, speed, and strategy. Soh Wai Ching has become a role model in the sport, inspiring young athletes in Malaysia and across Asia.

His record-breaking run drew attention from the international tower running community. Analysts say the 7:49 finish is a benchmark for future competitions. Athletes now aim to match or beat this time in upcoming events.

Soh’s win also highlights Malaysia’s presence in global sports. It comes just as many countries begin their 2026 sports calendar. Tower running experts say that Soh’s performance sets a high standard for the year ahead.

Fans and fellow competitors have praised Soh’s achievement. His ability to break a longstanding record under pressure demonstrates skill and determination. The race in Shanxi will be remembered as a landmark moment in tower running history.

Malaysia now celebrates its first sports triumph of 2026, thanks to Soh’s effort. His continued participation in international events promises more excitement for fans.

Soh Wai Ching tower record achievements are now part of sports headlines worldwide. His 2026 season is expected to be competitive, with top athletes tracking his performances closely.

The Shanxi victory is just the beginning of a year that could see more records broken. With races scheduled across Asia, Soh’s dedication and strategy will be key to maintaining his No. 1 world ranking.
