Team USA moved one step closer to Olympic glory on Friday night, overwhelming Slovakia 6-2 in the men’s hockey semifinals at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Jack Hughes scored twice, while goaltender Connor Hellebuyck allowed only two goals, ensuring the Americans will face Canada in Sunday’s gold-medal game.
The victory sets up a North American showdown between hockey powerhouses long regarded as rivals. Canada advanced earlier by rallying from a two-goal deficit to beat Finland, proving both teams are peaking at the right moment.
U.S. Eyes First Gold Since 1980
The Americans have not claimed Olympic gold in men’s hockey since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” They fell short in the final in Salt Lake City (2002) and Vancouver (2010), both times losing to Canada.
While Canada boasts a roster stacked with elite forwards, the U.S. has countered with a three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender in Hellebuyck and some of the NHL’s top defensemen.
“You want to go through the best and right now that’s them,” said U.S. defender Quinn Hughes. “If we played them in a best-of-seven, it would probably go seven. On Sunday, it’s just going to be whoever is better on that day.”
Semifinal Dominance Over Slovakia
Slovakia, the tournament’s surprise package, entered the semifinals with seven NHL players and strong momentum, having won their preliminary group over Sweden and Finland and then routed Germany in the quarterfinals.
However, the U.S. quickly took control. Dylan Larkin opened the scoring four minutes in after a perfectly timed line change, followed by Tage Thompson’s power-play goal late in the first period. The Americans pulled away in the second period with back-to-back goals from Hughes and Jack Eichel, giving them a commanding 5-0 lead before Slovakia managed two late goals.
Hellebuyck, focused on conserving energy for the upcoming clash with Canada, admitted a brief lapse allowed Slovakia to score in the third period, but the result was never in doubt.
A Rivalry Reignited
The U.S.-Canada hockey rivalry has been heating up since last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, when three fights broke out in the opening nine seconds of round-robin play. Connor McDavid helped Canada secure a 3-2 overtime win in the tournament final, fueling the anticipation for Sunday.
“It’s going to take that one performance, that one guy to step up, to have the game of his life,” said American forward Dylan Larkin. Matthew Tkachuk added, “This is the pinnacle of the sport. This is as good as it gets.”
Looking Ahead
Team USA now turns its full attention to Canada. The Canadians feature a star-studded lineup including McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Macklin Celebrini. Meanwhile, the Americans will rely on their depth, defense, and elite goaltending to finally overcome their longtime rivals and capture Olympic gold.
Sunday’s gold-medal game promises to be a high-stakes, high-intensity clash that could finally see Team USA return to the top of the Olympic podium after more than four decades.
This victory marks not just a semifinal win, but a defining moment in the 2026 Winter Olympics as hockey fans worldwide prepare for what could be one of the most memorable gold-medal matchups in recent history.
