Apple is now thinking about using artificial intelligence from OpenAI or Anthropic to power a smarter version of Siri. This would be a big change from its past plan of using only in-house AI tools. The news comes from sources familiar with the matter.

Apple has talked with both companies about using their large language models. These are advanced AI systems that can understand and respond to natural language. Apple asked them to create special versions of their models that can work on Apple’s own cloud systems. These tests are still in the early stages. Apple has not made a final choice yet.

This possible move shows that Apple is looking for better ways to improve Siri. In a market where other tech firms are moving fast with AI, Apple is trying to catch up. Using outside help could help Siri offer smarter answers and smoother conversations. The upgrade could make Siri more useful for daily tasks.

Earlier this year, Apple said that big Siri improvements would not come until 2026. It did not give any reason for this delay. But in March, reports showed that internal changes slowed down progress. Apple made a leadership change in its AI team. Mike Rockwell now leads Siri, after CEO Tim Cook lost faith in the previous head of AI, John Giannandrea.

The company is also slowly opening its AI tools to others. At its yearly developer event, Apple said developers will get access to the AI model used in some Apple tools. Apple will also allow both its own and OpenAI’s code tools to run in developer software. These steps show that Apple is starting to allow more outside input.

The talks with OpenAI and Anthropic are part of that shift. Both companies are known for strong AI systems. OpenAI created ChatGPT. Anthropic developed Claude, another well-known chatbot. Apple might work with either of them to bring new features to Siri.

Right now, Apple is still testing the waters. It wants to see if these models can be used safely and smoothly inside its system. That is why it is asking OpenAI and Anthropic to test their tools on Apple’s own cloud setup. This lets Apple keep control over user privacy and data, something the company has always cared about.

On the same day this news came out, Apple’s stock price rose. It had dropped earlier, but then closed 2% higher. This suggests that investors are hopeful about Apple’s future in AI. They may see this move as a sign that Apple is serious about catching up in the race for smart tools.

If Apple goes ahead, it could mean big changes for users. A smarter Siri might help with live translations, writing tips, or even full conversations. It could help users manage their day, control their smart homes, or get faster answers.

Still, Apple has not said anything official. OpenAI and Apple did not reply to requests for comment. Anthropic said nothing as well. So, for now, the details remain private.

Even so, it’s clear that Apple is looking outside its own team for the first time in a long while. Whether or not it picks OpenAI or Anthropic, the goal is clear. Apple wants Siri to be smarter, faster, and more helpful.

This new strategy could change how people use Apple devices. It may also shape how Apple builds AI in the future. For now, users will have to wait and see what the Siri AI upgrade looks like — and when it arrives.
