COLUMBUS — Ohio has taken a major step forward in law enforcement technology with the statewide expansion of enhanced aviation downlink capabilities. Governor Mike DeWine, Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Andy Wilson, and Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Superintendent Col. Charles Jones announced on Friday that the new system is now accessible to law enforcement agencies across the state.

The advanced technology enables OSHP’s Aviation Unit to transmit live aerial video feeds to command staff on the ground during active investigations and emergencies. Previously, this technology was limited to local law enforcement agencies in Columbus and Akron. However, with nine newly installed downlink receivers strategically positioned across Ohio, aerial footage can now be accessed from any location within the state.

Revolutionizing Law Enforcement with Real-Time Aerial Footage

“This technology virtually puts the on-ground incident commander up in the sky with our Ohio State Highway Patrol team, giving them broader perspectives of active scenes and more information to help make critical public safety decisions,” said Governor DeWine. “Before now, local law enforcement relied on radio descriptions of aerial views. Now, they can see events unfold in real time, dramatically improving situational awareness.”

Ohio is now one of only two states in the U.S. with the capability to downlink live aerial video statewide. Law enforcement officers with internet access and proper credentials can stream live footage on phones, tablets, or desktop computers, ensuring immediate access to crucial data.

Enhanced Public Safety and Faster Response Times

Colonel Charles A. Jones, OSHP Superintendent, emphasized how this technology strengthens collaborative efforts in public safety. “Providing real-time aerial footage directly to our law enforcement partners enhances situational awareness, speeds response times, and supports informed decisions to protect our communities,” he said.

OSHP’s Aviation Unit responds to over 1,000 support calls annually. Their missions range from violent crime reduction and suspect searches to missing person cases, storm damage assessments, and vehicle pursuit mitigation.

Supporting Rural and Underserved Law Enforcement Agencies

Many law enforcement agencies, particularly in rural areas, lack aviation resources. “This incredible asset provides a valuable resource to help those agencies fight crime and protect the public,” said Director Andy Wilson of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. By allowing rural law enforcement agencies access to advanced aerial footage, authorities can significantly improve response times and overall public safety measures.

    Funding and Crime Reduction Benefits

The expansion of Ohio’s aviation downlink program was made possible primarily through state and federal funding from the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program. The technology aims to assist law enforcement in reducing violent crime by improving the chances of apprehending offenders and deterring future criminal activity.

By leveraging cutting-edge aerial technology, Ohio continues to set new standards in law enforcement effectiveness, ensuring safer communities through faster and more informed decision-making.
