The Railway Ministry has started a pilot project to use drones for monitoring uneven loading in freight trains. This project will begin in three zones: South Eastern Railway, South East Central Railway, and South Western Railway. The aim is to improve safety and prevent derailments caused by unevenly loaded wagons.

Uneven loading is a major cause of freight train accidents. The ministry plans to use drone technology to monitor load distribution in real time. Drones will provide aerial images and videos before trains leave the terminals. Visual software will help detect any unsafe or unbalanced loading automatically.

The project includes hiring qualified drone operators who will scan trains before dispatch. Video feeds will be transmitted live to control centers for monitoring. Monthly reports with data logs and exceptions will be submitted by the zones involved.

The ministry has also suggested other railway departments use drones to survey difficult locations. Terminals with heavy traffic and frequent uneven loading issues will be prioritized. Experts believe drones can help spot problems that are hard to detect on the ground, reducing risks and improving freight train safety.

This pilot is part of the ministry’s plan to modernize freight operations using advanced technology. If successful, drone monitoring may expand to more zones and other railway safety uses.
