Romanian police have opened an investigation into influencer Tristan Tate. He is accused of posting political content during the recent election, which may be against Romanian law.
The Tristan Tate election probe began after police in Ilfov County received an official complaint. The complaint said he may have shared a message online that aimed to sway voters. Posting political content on election day is not allowed in Romania.
Tristan Tate is a British-American social media figure and the younger brother of Andrew Tate. The two are known for their large online following and controversial public remarks. Together, they have over 13 million followers.
Authorities say the post shared by Tristan may include direct or indirect political opinions. If true, it could break election laws that ban campaigning on voting days. It could also raise concerns about foreign interference in Romanian elections.
Tristan, who is 36, has been called in for questioning this Tuesday. According to police sources, Andrew Tate is not involved in this case.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) during the election, Tristan claimed he was not campaigning. He said he was speaking as “an American man, using an American platform, in Dubai” and did not think Romania’s laws applied to him. He has not made any other public comment.
His legal team has also not responded to media requests. The post that sparked the investigation has not been made public.
This is not the only legal issue the Tate brothers are facing. Both Tristan and Andrew have been under investigation in Romania for other serious charges. These include human trafficking and rape, which they both deny.
The brothers were arrested in December 2022 and later placed under house arrest. In August 2024, more charges were added. These included trafficking underage persons and having sex with minors. Both brothers have denied all accusations.
Aside from the cases in Romania, they are also being investigated in the United Kingdom. Authorities there have filed 21 charges, including rape and human trafficking. Police in Bedfordshire issued an arrest warrant in March 2024. At that time, the brothers said they were “very innocent men” and rejected all charges.
A Romanian court said they could not be sent to the UK until the Romanian cases were finished. In early 2025, prosecutors lifted a two-year travel ban. The brothers flew to Florida by private jet in February. They later returned to Romania in March and told reporters that “innocent men don’t run from anything.”
Tristan and Andrew have built a strong online brand over the years. They have also received widespread criticism for making offensive remarks, especially about women. Despite this, their fan base continues to grow.
Now, Tristan faces new legal trouble with the Tristan Tate election probe. Authorities are trying to find out whether his online activity tried to shape voter choices in a way that broke the law.
As the investigation moves forward, Romanian officials stress that their laws apply to all political messaging, regardless of the speaker’s nationality or online location.
With multiple legal cases ongoing in two countries, the Tate brothers remain under close public and legal watch.
