President Trump took center stage Sunday night at the Kennedy Center Honors, celebrating some of the biggest names in entertainment. The event marked the first time a sitting president hosted the awards. Trump, who now chairs the Kennedy Center board, said he was closely involved in choosing the honorees.
“This is the greatest evening at the Kennedy Center,” Trump told the crowd, joking about renaming it the Trump-Kennedy Center. Earlier this August, he announced the honorees’ names, breaking from tradition.
The rock band KISS, without their signature makeup, walked the red carpet in tuxedos. They were joined by other entertainment icons like Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester Stallone, George Strait, and Michael Crawford. Fans and media alike swarmed the band, celebrating their decades-long impact on rock music.
Ace Frehley, KISS’s guitarist, passed away in October. Singer Paul Stanley reflected on their legacy, saying, “We can mourn him, and celebrate what we accomplished.” Garth Brooks called the band timeless and praised their signature makeup for making them instantly recognizable.
Actor Sylvester Stallone was among the first honorees. Composer Bill Conti performed selections from the Rocky score, while Kurt Russell shared stories of working with Stallone on Tango and Cash. Russell joked, “When Sly gives you a love tap, it’s like a sledgehammer hitting your shoulder.”
Michael Crawford, famed for Phantom of the Opera, was honored by Kelsey Grammer. Grammer spoke on the red carpet about respecting the Kennedy Center Honors and praised Trump for investing in the center, noting, “It was pretty much falling down.”
Country superstar George Strait received tributes from Vince Gill, Brooks and Dunn, and Miranda Lambert. Gill performed Strait’s song “Troubadour,” celebrating his place as one of the best-selling country artists ever.
Disco legend Gloria Gaynor was honored by singer Elle King, who called her the Queen of the Discotheques and performed “I Will Survive.” Gospel acts introduced by Montana Tucker also performed in her honor.
Cheap Trick performed a lively rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” capping off a night of music and celebration. Trump closed the ceremony, wishing attendees a safe journey home. When asked about next year’s honorees, he said, “I can’t tell you that yet. A lot of people want to be on my list.”
Throughout the night, Trump highlighted his efforts to revitalize the Kennedy Center. His leadership has faced criticism, including a Senate investigation alleging “cronyism and corruption.” Kennedy Center ambassador Richard Grenell called these claims false, defending Trump’s work with the institution.
The Kennedy Center Honors highlighted decades of talent across music, film, and performance arts. Despite political controversies surrounding the president, the evening focused on celebrating the achievements of entertainment legends.
