Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a US-Saudi dual national, is finally returning home after being held in Saudi Arabia for criticizing the Saudi government. His son, Ibrahim Almadi, said the Trump administration played a key role in securing his father’s release.

“They really delivered when it comes to my father’s situation. Saudi Arabia is supposed to be an ally, but they’ve been mistreating us for a while. Finally, they are correcting the course for my father,” Ibrahim Almadi told CNN’s Erin Burnett.

Saad Almadi had been sentenced to 16 years in 2022 for posting tweets critical of the Saudi government. Although he was released in 2023, he remained in Riyadh under a travel ban. His son emphasized that his father would not be free until he returned to the United States.

News of his release came as President Donald Trump hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at a US-Saudi investment conference in Washington, DC. Trump praised the crown prince during the state visit, highlighting his record on human rights.

Ibrahim Almadi said his father was told that his release was “a forgiveness from the king and crown prince.” When asked if the state visit influenced the release, he said, “Absolutely. It’s crystal clear to me that, Mr. President, without him, my father wouldn’t be released. I’m very thankful for the Trump administration and the Department of State.”

The Almadi family confirmed on X that Saad Ibrahim Almadi was on his way back to the United States. They acknowledged the role of President Trump and his administration in making this possible.

“Thank you to everyone who stood by us during this horrific ordeal,” the family said. “We hope the support and care we received will continue for those still held hostage in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world.”

The case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of US citizens abroad and the diplomatic efforts sometimes required to secure their safe return. Saad Almadi’s release is seen as a result of coordinated efforts between the US government and Saudi officials, underscoring the role of diplomacy in resolving such cases.
