Vietnam is increasing its rice exports to Canada, a country with a large demand for rice and a growing Asian population of about 7 million people. Canada imports around 500 million USD worth of rice each year, making it one of the world’s top rice importers. Currently, over half of Canada’s rice imports come from the United States. Vietnam, supported by the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), is working to expand its market share in Canada. The popularity of Vietnam’s premium ST25 rice is helping to boost this effort.

The Vietnam Trade Office in Canada has been actively assisting domestic exporters and Vietnamese businesses overseas. Their goal is to increase Vietnam’s share of Canada’s rice market from just above 2 percent to a higher level. Companies like KD Trading have imported ST25 rice to Canada, helping to improve awareness of Vietnamese rice brands. This has allowed Vietnam to enter the list of the top five rice exporters to Canada.

Vietnamese rice brands gained attention at the recent SIAL food exhibition in Toronto. The Lotus brand showed several rice types, including jasmine rice, Japanese-style sushi rice, and ST25 rice. These varieties have been gaining popularity in large Canadian cities. Although exports have grown, there is still room for more expansion as companies seek to reach new customers and partners.

Vietnam’s agricultural exports, including rice and rice-based products like rice noodles, have strong potential in the Canadian market. Vietnamese products can compete well against imports from nearby countries such as Thailand. The Canadian market offers space for growth as it diversifies its sources of agricultural imports.

Global trade uncertainties are encouraging Canada to explore new suppliers. This presents an opportunity for Vietnamese exporters to increase their presence. Taking full advantage of free trade agreements between the two countries will be key to boosting Vietnam’s food exports to Canada and the wider North American region.

Vietnam’s efforts to grow its rice exports in Canada reflect a broader goal of expanding its agricultural trade worldwide. With high-quality rice products and strategic trade support, Vietnam is gaining recognition in international markets.

Vietnam’s rice export sector is showing steady growth in Canada, with hopes to raise its market share further in the near future. As Canadian demand for diverse rice types continues to rise, Vietnam is well positioned to meet this need.
