A Gaza-based doctor detained by Israeli forces since December is reportedly facing life-threatening health problems, according to his family. The man, identified as Hussam Abu Safiya, has allegedly lost around 30 kilograms during his time in detention and is said to be in a critical condition.

His son, Elias Abu Safiya, spoke about his father’s state during an interview. He described the situation as “harsh and catastrophic”, claiming that his father is being held without access to basic medical treatment. The family says the doctor is not receiving any of the medication he needs, and they are growing increasingly concerned for his life.

Dr. Abu Safiya was taken into custody late last year. His arrest took place amid heightened tensions and large-scale military operations in Gaza. Since then, communication has been limited. The family has struggled to obtain details about his legal status and health. Reports from rights groups suggest that his situation is part of a broader pattern affecting Palestinian detainees.

This week, Dr. Abu Safiya was given the 2025 Nizar Banat Award for human rights defenders. The recognition was announced by Lawyers for Justice, a Palestinian legal advocacy group. The group praised him for his service in the medical field and his efforts to provide care to civilians during difficult times in Gaza.

Before his detention, Dr. Abu Safiya worked as a respected medical professional in northern Gaza. He was known for offering help to people injured in military strikes and other emergencies. His arrest shocked many in the community, especially given his humanitarian role. Since then, calls for his release have come from several advocacy groups and public figures.

His son said the doctor is not only being denied medical help but is also enduring poor living conditions. According to the family, he has been placed in solitary confinement for long periods and is exposed to cold temperatures with little access to food or blankets. These claims have not been independently confirmed, but they match other reports about the treatment of detainees in Israeli prisons.

Several international human rights organizations have raised concerns about the way Palestinian prisoners are being treated. These groups say there is a lack of transparency in the detention process, especially in cases where individuals are held without charges or access to legal aid. Medical neglect is also a growing concern, particularly for older or ill prisoners.

Dr. Abu Safiya’s condition has drawn attention because of his background in health care and his previous work during wartime emergencies. His family believes he is being punished not for any crime, but for his position and reputation. They say they are now focused on trying to raise awareness about his condition in hopes of putting pressure on authorities to allow a medical checkup or even release.

The Nizar Banat Award, named after a Palestinian activist who died in custody in 2021, is given to individuals who show bravery in defending human rights under difficult conditions. Dr. Abu Safiya’s selection for the award highlights his role in helping people during times of conflict and his continued commitment, even while detained.

His case has sparked growing attention both locally and internationally. Social media users and human rights defenders are urging humanitarian agencies to step in and demand better treatment for the doctor. Some are also asking for wider reform in the treatment of prisoners and more oversight of detention practices.

The Gaza doctor health crisis continues to unfold with little clarity about his legal status or future. His family hopes international pressure might help secure his medical treatment and ensure his basic rights are respected.
