Eleven people were killed and at least 20 others were injured after gunmen opened fire during a religious festival in the central Mexican city of Irapuato. The event took place Tuesday night in Guanajuato, a state that has become one of the most violent in the country due to ongoing gang turf wars. The attack happened during a local celebration of the Nativity of John the Baptist.

Authorities arrived at the scene to find blood on the ground and bullet holes in nearby buildings. Witnesses described a scene of panic as people ran for cover. Many rushed the injured to hospitals in private vehicles, hoping to save lives before ambulances could reach them. One eyewitness, who asked not to be named due to safety fears, said the area descended into chaos almost instantly.

According to the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office, the victims included a 17-year-old boy, eight adult men, and two women. Officials said the incident is under investigation and promised that the people responsible will face justice. Police and other security forces launched a search operation for the attackers. In the meantime, local authorities are offering psychological support to families and those affected by the incident.

President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke about the tragedy during her daily press conference. She condemned the violence and described the shooting as a confrontation. She did not give further details about the attackers or their motives. A video posted online appears to show the moment the gunfire started. In the video, people can be seen dancing and celebrating before they suddenly scatter in fear.

Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise also spoke out, calling the attack unacceptable. She expressed her sorrow and sent her condolences to the victims’ families. She said the government stands in solidarity with the community and will support efforts to bring peace and justice.

Guanajuato is both an economic and cultural hub, home to major industries and popular tourist destinations. But despite its rich culture, the state has become a flashpoint in the country’s broader struggle with organized crime. According to official data, Guanajuato recorded more than 3,000 murders in the past year, more than any other state in Mexico.

Much of the violence in the region is linked to conflict between two rival gangs: the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The Jalisco cartel is considered one of the most powerful and violent drug organizations in Latin America. It has even been labeled a foreign terrorist group by the U.S. government.

The latest mass shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have rocked the state in recent months. Just last month, authorities found 17 bodies inside an abandoned house in Guanajuato. A few days earlier, gunmen killed seven people, including children. At the scene of that attack, police also discovered banners that referred to the Santa Rosa de Lima gang.

Earlier this year, in February, five women and three men were gunned down in a public street. In January, police clashed with a group of armed men in another part of Guanajuato, leaving ten suspected criminals dead and three officers injured. These frequent outbursts of violence have left residents fearful and grieving, with many feeling that safety is no longer guaranteed even during peaceful community events.

Since 2006, when Mexico launched a military-led crackdown on drug trafficking, the country has seen nearly 480,000 murders. Over 120,000 people are listed as missing. Most of this violence has been linked to organized crime and the control of drug routes, weapons, and illegal trade.

Despite continued efforts by security forces, including raids and arrests, the violence in Guanajuato and other parts of Mexico shows no sign of stopping. Local communities are calling for more support, more protection, and long-term solutions to stop the bloodshed.

As investigations into Tuesday’s shooting continue, officials have not yet released information about possible suspects. However, given the history of gang conflict in the region, many believe the attack is likely linked to ongoing cartel rivalries. Authorities have promised to act quickly and bring those responsible to justice.

This attack has left many in mourning. A community gathering meant for celebration ended in horror, once again highlighting the deep impact of Mexico’s cartel violence on daily life. As families bury their loved ones, the country is left asking when the bloodshed will end.
