Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state lawmaker and democratic socialist, has taken the lead in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. With 90% of votes counted, Mamdani holds 43.5%, while former Governor Andrew Cuomo trails with 36.3%. Cuomo conceded on Tuesday night and praised Mamdani for running a strong and inspiring campaign.

If Mamdani wins the race, he will become the city’s first Muslim mayor. His rise has surprised many and marks a shift away from traditional political power structures. The final result could take days, as the ranked-choice voting system will now come into play. Under this system, voters can rank up to five candidates. Because no one reached the 50% mark, the board will now count second-choice votes.

Cuomo admitted defeat in a speech on Tuesday night, saying Mamdani deserved to win. He said Mamdani built a campaign that moved and motivated young people. Cuomo also shared that he had called Mamdani to offer his congratulations. While Cuomo started the race with better name recognition and early support, Mamdani gained ground quickly in the final weeks. His campaign focused on young voters, social media, and local events.

Mamdani ran on a progressive platform. He promised to freeze rent, improve public transport, and offer free bus rides. His campaign grew rapidly after support from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. A large rally in June, where Ocasio-Cortez endorsed him, attracted thousands. His online following and youth support became key strengths in the race.

Cuomo took a more traditional path. He avoided big rallies and instead held smaller events in union offices and community centers. Though he had more funding, including millions from outside donors, his campaign mostly focused on attacking Mamdani. Reports said Cuomo had over $25 million in outside support, the most ever seen in a city primary.

Despite the summer heat, turnout remained strong. Early voting started on June 14. By Sunday, over 380,000 people had voted early. That number more than doubled the turnout for the 2021 primary. On Tuesday, temperatures reached 100°F (38°C), but over 1 million voters were estimated to have cast ballots.

This primary has drawn attention nationwide. The face-off between Cuomo and Mamdani reflected a wider debate in the Democratic party. Cuomo represented a centrist approach. Mamdani stood for bold progressive change. The race became a test of what Democratic voters in big cities want for the future.

Cuomo had once held a 30-point lead in polls. But recent surveys showed Mamdani gaining fast. One poll released on Monday predicted Mamdani would win after ranked-choice rounds were completed. That prediction now seems likely, as Mamdani is expected to benefit more from second-choice votes, especially from supporters of Brad Lander, who finished third.

While the winner of the primary won’t be confirmed mayor yet, they are expected to win the general election in November. New York City is a Democratic stronghold, and the Republican vote share is very small. The current mayor, Eric Adams, is deeply unpopular and is now running as an independent. He faced criminal charges last year for bribery and illegal donations. Those charges were dropped in April, but his approval ratings remain low.

Mamdani’s strong showing has excited progressives across the country. His campaign has shown that grassroots support can overcome money and political connections. If he wins, Mamdani will make history and possibly shape a new future for American cities. His success could inspire more candidates like him in the years to come.
