Investors are reassessing the risks of artificial intelligence companies as concerns grow over the amount of money being borrowed to build data centres and computing systems. A fall in some AI-related stocks has encouraged investors to move more money into government bonds, which are often seen as safer assets during periods of market uncertainty. The shift reflects questions about whether the huge cost of expanding AI infrastructure will produce enough profit.

AI companies need powerful chips, large data centres and reliable energy supplies to operate their services. Building this infrastructure can require billions of dollars before a business begins to earn enough revenue to cover the cost. Some firms rely heavily on loans and bond sales to finance expansion. If demand grows as expected, the investment may pay off. If growth slows or costs rise, however, highly indebted companies could struggle to meet their obligations.

The changing mood has also affected the relationship between stocks and bonds. Investors often buy government bonds when they become worried about falling share prices. Bond prices can rise as demand increases, pushing yields lower. This pattern suggests that some investors are seeking protection while they review the outlook for technology companies. Lenders are also watching whether firms can turn spending into steady cash flow.

The AI sector is not made up of identical businesses. Companies with strong revenue and manageable debt may be better placed to withstand a market downturn than firms that depend on repeated borrowing. Investors will therefore need to examine business models, debt levels and the timing of expected profits. The latest market shift does not prove that the AI boom is ending, but it shows that financial risks are receiving more attention as investment costs rise.
