The National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) has unveiled the PASCAL transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) procedure as a groundbreaking alternative for patients suffering from severe mitral valve disease. This innovative treatment offers a less invasive option compared to traditional open-heart surgery, significantly improving patient recovery times and reducing surgical risks.

A New Alternative for Mitral Valve Disease

Mitral regurgitation, a condition where the heart’s mitral valve does not close properly, affects millions of people worldwide. If left untreated, it can lead to heart failure and other severe complications. Conventional treatment often involves open-heart surgery, which carries inherent risks, particularly for elderly patients or those with preexisting conditions.

The PASCAL TEER procedure provides a minimally invasive solution. Instead of opening the chest, doctors use a catheter-based system to repair the faulty mitral valve, allowing the heart to function more efficiently.

How the PASCAL TEER Procedure Works

The procedure involves inserting a small device via a catheter through a vein in the groin. Once in place, the PASCAL device helps the valve leaflets close more effectively, reducing blood leakage and restoring normal heart function.

According to NUHCS, this innovative method helps patients recover faster, with shorter hospital stays and fewer complications compared to open-heart surgery.

    Expert Insights on the Procedure

Dr. John Tan, a leading cardiologist at NUHCS, highlighted the benefits of the new procedure: “The PASCAL TEER technique allows us to treat high-risk patients who may not be eligible for open-heart surgery. This advancement in mitral valve repair represents a significant step forward in cardiac care.”

Studies have shown that minimally invasive mitral valve repair procedures lead to improved quality of life and lower mortality rates. Patients undergoing TEER experience reduced symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue, enabling them to return to daily activities sooner.

    Patient Experience and Success Stories

NUHCS has successfully treated several patients using the PASCAL TEER procedure. One patient, 72-year-old Mr. Lim, shared his experience: “I was worried about undergoing surgery due to my age, but the PASCAL procedure was smooth, and I was able to go home within a few days. I feel much better now.”

Early data from NUHCS indicates that patients who undergo the PASCAL TEER procedure experience fewer complications, such as infections or stroke, compared to traditional surgery.

Global Adoption and Future of TEER

The PASCAL TEER procedure has been gaining global recognition, with leading heart centers worldwide adopting the technique to improve patient outcomes. In the United States and Europe, similar procedures have been successfully performed, further validating its effectiveness.

NUHCS continues to be at the forefront of cardiac innovation, ensuring Singaporeans have access to world-class heart treatments. With advancements in medical technology, the future of mitral valve repair looks promising, offering hope to many patients who previously had limited treatment options.

The introduction of the PASCAL TEER procedure at NUHCS marks a significant milestone in cardiac care. By offering a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery, it provides new hope for patients suffering from mitral valve disease.
