In a historic decision, over 100 officers of Pakistan’s Punjab Police have been dismissed from service for refusing to perform security duties during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Authorities have emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards negligence, reinforcing the importance of ensuring the safety of international sporting events.

    Mass Dismissal Over Security Negligence

According to official reports, more than 100 police officials and officers were removed from their positions after repeatedly failing to report for duty. Some officers were found absent on multiple occasions, while others outright refused to fulfill their assigned tasks. The dismissed personnel were assigned to provide security for teams traveling between Qaddafi Stadium Lahore and designated hotels.

Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Anwar has taken strict notice of the incident. “There is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events,” said IGP Anwar. He confirmed that immediate action was taken to uphold the integrity of security operations during the tournament.

    Reasons Behind the Refusal

While there is no official statement explaining why the officers refused their duties, local media reports suggest that excessive working hours and fatigue may have played a role in their decision. Several reports claim that the dismissed officers were overburdened with long and strenuous shifts, leading to dissatisfaction and absenteeism.

Security officials play a critical role in managing large-scale international sporting events. The Champions Trophy, one of cricket’s most prestigious tournaments, demands heightened vigilance due to the presence of high-profile players and large crowds. The Pakistani government had assured the International Cricket Council (ICC) of top-notch security arrangements to host the event successfully.

    Pakistan’s Performance in the Tournament

Pakistan’s national cricket team has already been eliminated from the Champions Trophy 2025 following defeats against New Zealand and India. The team’s early exit has dampened local enthusiasm, but the tournament continues to attract cricket fans worldwide.

    No Security Threats, Says Government

Despite concerns over security lapses, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has reassured the public that Pakistan is safely hosting the tournament. In an interview with Geo News, he stated, “Pakistan is peacefully and efficiently hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our stadiums are full, international fans are present, and the atmosphere is celebratory. There is no credible terror threat to the event.”

This statement was aimed at quelling fears surrounding potential security threats, especially after the controversy regarding the dismissed police personnel. The government remains committed to ensuring the safety of players, officials, and spectators throughout the tournament.

    Implications and Future Security Measures

The dismissal of over 100 policemen is a rare and significant action that highlights the administration’s strict stance on security matters. Experts suggest that this move could serve as a deterrent against negligence in future events. The government is expected to implement additional measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure seamless security operations.
