Tipton Sports Academy in the Black Country has officially opened its first-ever indoor padel courts, marking a significant milestone for the region. The new facility is part of a £155,000 investment to bring padel, the fastest-growing sport in the world, to local residents.

A New Sport for the Black Country

The opening event was attended by Sandwell Council CEO Shokat Lal and Sandwell Leisure Trust (SLT) CEO Mark Braithwaite. Also present were UK-ranked professionals Tia Norton and George Weller, who had the honor of being the first to try out the courts.

Shokat Lal expressed his excitement about the new addition to the area. “This is another first for the borough, and I am thrilled to bring padel to Tipton with our partners at Sandwell Leisure Trust,” he said. “We continue to innovate and find new opportunities to make Sandwell an exciting place to live, work, and enjoy leisure time.”

    A Sport for Everyone

Mark Braithwaite, CEO of Sandwell Leisure Trust and an avid padel player himself, also shared his enthusiasm. “I am delighted to bring these fantastic indoor padel courts to Tipton Sports Academy. We are always looking for new ways to engage people in physical activity and help them lead healthy lives,” he said. “Padel is easy to play and perfect for people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. It’s an excellent way to socialize with family, friends, or fellow enthusiasts.”

    What is Padel?

Padel is a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. It is typically played in doubles and uses the same scoring system as tennis. The game takes place on a smaller court, enclosed with glass walls. Players use solid, stringless, composite rackets to hit a softer ball over the net and off the walls.

One of the key features of padel is its accessibility. It’s easy to learn, and anyone can pick it up quickly. The underarm serve adds to the sport’s simplicity, making it enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels.

    Growing Popularity of Padel

Padel was invented in Mexico in the late 1960s but has experienced a dramatic surge in popularity in recent years. Today, there are more than eight million players across Europe. The new indoor courts at Tipton Sports Academy are a welcome addition to the growing trend of padel in the UK.

Bookings for the new courts can be made via the Sandwell Leisure Trust website, offering both locals and visitors the chance to enjoy this exciting sport all year round.

A Step Forward for Sandwell’s Leisure Offerings

The introduction of indoor padel courts at Tipton Sports Academy highlights Sandwell’s commitment to offering new and innovative leisure activities for the community. By capitalizing on the popularity of padel, the borough is further establishing itself as a destination for sports and recreation.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a beginner, padel provides an engaging and enjoyable way to stay active and connect with others. With these new courts, Tipton is set to become a hub for padel enthusiasts in the region.
