Mount Etna, Europe’s Most Active Volcano, Erupts Again

Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, has erupted again. The volcano, located in Italy, began spewing lava and ash late Tuesday night, local time. According to a report from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, the eruption was powerful and sudden.

The eruption started from the volcano’s southeast crater. It sent two streams of lava flowing to the south and east. Thick smoke and ash filled the air, making the sky glow red during the night.

Italy’s National Civil Protection Department gave an official statement. They said Mount Etna has now entered an “early warning” stage. The height of the lava fountains has increased. Experts fear that a stronger blast could happen at any time.

Mount Etna is located near the city of Catania, on the island of Sicily. Catania is the closest city to the volcano and has already started taking emergency steps. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

The volcano has a long history of activity. It has been active since at least 425 B.C., making it one of the oldest still-active volcanoes in the world. Over the years, it has erupted many times, but it continues to surprise scientists with its behavior.

Tuesday’s eruption did not cause any reported injuries or deaths. But people in nearby towns were warned to stay indoors. Ash falling from the sky could harm lungs or eyes and make roads slippery.

Volcanologists are now studying the flow and pressure inside the volcano. They are using sensors and satellites to understand the situation better. The early warning system in place helped detect changes in the volcano’s activity before the major eruption.

This recent activity shows how unpredictable nature can be. Even though Mount Etna is one of the most studied volcanoes in the world, it still poses a great risk. People living nearby are used to these kinds of events but are always alert.

Flights to and from Catania Airport may be delayed or canceled due to ash in the air. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines before flying. Authorities have also asked people not to go near the volcano.

Mount Etna sits on the edge of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates. When these plates move, they create pressure deep underground. This pressure builds up and can lead to eruptions like the one on Tuesday.

In recent years, Etna has erupted several times. Some eruptions are small, while others are more powerful. The current eruption is being closely watched to see how it develops.

Sicily’s local government is working with Italy’s national agencies to keep people safe. Emergency services are on standby, and evacuation plans are ready if needed.

The latest eruption reminds the world that volcanoes like Mount Etna can wake up at any time. While the lava flows have not yet reached homes or buildings, people living near the volcano must remain alert.

Mount Etna is not just a threat — it is also a symbol of Sicily. Many tourists visit the volcano every year. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds great cultural and natural value.

For now, the world watches and waits. Will Etna calm down, or is this the start of something bigger? Only time will tell.
