Chicago Fire, the city’s Major League Soccer team, has announced plans to build a $650 million stadium in downtown Chicago. The team will pay for the project without any government funding. The decision came after Illinois officials turned down a separate request for public money to build a new baseball stadium in the same area.

The new soccer stadium will be located on the Near South Side of the city. This is the same site that the Chicago White Sox had wanted for a new baseball field. But their plan needed public money, and when that did not happen, the space became available. Now, Chicago Fire stadium is moving forward with its own project.

The planned stadium will seat around 25,000 people. It is expected to open in 2028. The team currently plays its home games at Soldier Field, a large stadium mostly used for American football. Officials from the team say that having a smaller, soccer-specific stadium will help improve the fan experience and create a better home for the club.

The location change happened after state leaders said no to the baseball stadium subsidy. That opened the door for the soccer team to make their offer. The city quickly supported the idea because the soccer project does not require tax money and matches other development goals for the area.

Chicago Fire’s stadium will be fully privately funded. The team is taking on the full cost of $650 million. This is different from many other stadium projects in the U.S. that rely on public money. Local officials say this approach is good for the city because it brings development without using taxpayer dollars.

The stadium project is also expected to bring economic benefits. It will create construction jobs and boost local businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and stores. In addition to the stadium, the plan includes new training grounds and spaces for the community. These areas may be used by local youth soccer teams and other programs.

City planners believe the stadium can help bring more events to the city. These may include concerts and international soccer matches. That could bring more visitors and money into the area. Experts note that while stadiums do not always give big returns, the long-term benefits depend on how well the project connects with the local economy.

The public has mostly welcomed the news. Fans of the Chicago Fire are excited to see their team get a new home made just for soccer. Some local groups have shared concerns about traffic and housing prices, but the city plans to hold public meetings to hear their views and make adjustments.

The project will begin construction in 2026. Before that, it still needs final approvals, including environmental reviews and zoning changes. Team officials say they are working with city agencies to make sure all rules are followed.

Chicago Fire is not the only MLS team building a stadium. Other teams in cities like Nashville, Austin, and St. Louis have recently opened new soccer-only stadiums. These venues help teams attract more fans and give a better experience during matches. The new stadium in Chicago follows this growing trend.

The timing is also important. Soccer is becoming more popular in the U.S., and the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted in North America. That event is expected to bring more attention to the sport. A new stadium in Chicago could help the city host international games and become a bigger part of global soccer events.

This $650 million stadium project is a major step for soccer in Chicago. It shows the team’s long-term commitment to the city and the sport. With full private funding and growing public support, it could help reshape how sports projects are done in major cities.
