Ukraine on Tuesday returned a new group of prisoners of war from Russian captivity as part of an earlier agreement with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. The soldiers returned are seriously wounded and need urgent medical care.

This exchange is one of several prisoner swaps between Ukraine and Russia since the conflict began in February 2022. Both sides have carried out multiple rounds of prisoner returns to ensure the humane treatment of captured soldiers.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that the latest group includes dozens of injured soldiers who fought on the front lines. Medical teams were ready to provide immediate treatment as the prisoners arrived back in Ukraine. This move highlights Ukraine’s focus on supporting its soldiers and providing care to those affected by the war.

Prisoner exchanges are important steps for reducing tensions and upholding human rights during the conflict. International organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross often monitor these transfers to ensure they follow humanitarian laws.

The war has resulted in thousands of soldiers captured by both sides, with concerns raised about conditions in captivity and access to medical care. Ukraine continues to demand the proper treatment and release of its captured soldiers under international law.

Ukrainian officials have promised full medical support and rehabilitation for the returned prisoners. The government aims to help these injured soldiers recover and return to normal life or military service.

The return of wounded soldiers is a significant humanitarian step during the ongoing conflict. It shows a rare moment of cooperation between the two sides and emphasizes the need to protect human life even in war.
