Investors are reassessing the cost of Meta’s technology expansion after the company’s latest results raised questions about its capital commitments and exposure to legal challenges. The concerns contributed to a wider decline in technology shares on Thursday, as markets became more cautious about the returns expected from artificial intelligence investment.

Meta reported revenue above expectations, but the market response showed that strong sales are not the only factor investors consider. The company’s plans to issue non-voting stock and its spending commitments attracted attention, while a major data-privacy penalty in New Mexico added to concerns about regulatory risk.

Technology companies have been investing heavily in the infrastructure needed to support advanced AI systems. Data centres, computing chips and networking equipment require large amounts of capital. Companies argue that these investments can support new services and create long-term growth, but investors want evidence that revenue will eventually justify the expense.

The issue is particularly important because large technology companies account for a substantial share of major stock-market indexes. When their shares fall, the impact can spread beyond the companies themselves and influence investor sentiment across other sectors.

Meta is not alone in facing these questions. Across the technology industry, businesses are competing to develop AI products while trying to manage costs and maintain profitability. Some investors are concerned that companies may be spending faster than customers are adopting new services.

Legal and regulatory risks add another challenge. Data privacy has become a major issue for technology companies as governments examine how personal information is collected, processed and used. Large penalties can affect earnings, but the wider cost may include changes to products and business practices.

The market reaction does not necessarily mean investors have lost confidence in AI as a whole. Rather, it suggests that expectations are becoming more demanding. Companies may need to demonstrate that their investments can generate stable revenue and improve efficiency, not simply promise future innovation.

Upcoming earnings reports will provide more information about demand and spending plans. Investors will look at revenue growth, profit margins and forecasts to decide whether valuations remain justified.

For Meta and its competitors, the challenge is to maintain investment while showing financial discipline. The next phase of the AI boom may depend on the ability to turn expensive infrastructure into services that customers are willing to pay for over the long term.
