Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has expressed strong confidence in the Flying Eagles’ ability to cruise past South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco in the upcoming 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking from his base in London, Akwuegbu assured that Nigeria’s youth football dominance will see them qualify from their group and contend for the championship.

    Nigeria’s Strength in Youth Football

The 2025 CAF U-20 AFCON is set to take place in Ivory Coast from April 26 to May 18, with four semi-finalists earning qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. Nigeria, drawn in Group B, will face strong competition from Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa. However, Akwuegbu remains unfazed, citing the Flying Eagles’ pedigree and history of success in youth tournaments.

“Nigeria has repeatedly shown they are the powerhouse of African youth football. As a result, the Flying Eagles have all it takes to see off South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco to qualify from their group,” Akwuegbu told Completesports.com.

    Chasing the World Cup Spot

With seven CAF U-20 AFCON titles, Nigeria holds the best record in the tournament’s history. The team has also been a consistent force at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, reaching the final twice. This track record, Akwuegbu believes, makes them strong contenders not just for a semi-final spot but for the ultimate trophy.

“I’m not losing any sleep over it. I know very well that Nigeria will advance,” he added. “It’s not just about the group stage; I see them going all the way to qualify for the World Cup and eventually winning the CAF U-20 AFCON in Ivory Coast.”

Tough Competition from North African Giants

While Nigeria remains a favorite, Egypt and Morocco are formidable opponents. Both teams have a history of producing talented young players who later make a mark in European club football. Egypt has won the CAF U-20 AFCON four times, while Morocco, though less dominant, continues to improve in youth competitions.

South Africa, on the other hand, has struggled at this level, with their best finish being a runners-up position in 1997. However, they remain a competitive side capable of causing upsets.

    Preparations and Expectations

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is expected to commence intensive preparations for the tournament, ensuring that the Flying Eagles have the best possible squad. With many young Nigerian players excelling in European and domestic leagues, the team is likely to feature a mix of homegrown and foreign-based talents.

Coach Ladan Bosso, who has guided the team in previous campaigns, will be keen to build a squad capable of dominating the tournament and securing a World Cup berth.

Akwuegbu’s confidence reflects the expectations of Nigerian football fans, who are eager to see the Flying Eagles reclaim continental glory. As the countdown to the tournament begins, all eyes will be on Nigeria’s preparations and squad selection.
